Today we commemorate the last enslaved African Americans in the United States being declared free. is now a public holiday albeit over 150 years late. “Now I’ve been free, I know what a dreadful condition slavery is. I have seen hundreds of escaped slaves, but I never saw one who was willing to go back and be a slave.” - Harriet Tubman ✊🏾

Indeed, “Several towns and cities across America claim to have observed their own earlier versions of Memorial Day or “Decoration Day” as early as 1866. (The earlier name is derived from the fact that decorating graves was and remains a central activity of Memorial Day.) But it wasn’t until a remarkable discovery in a dusty Harvard University archive the late 1990s that historians learned about a Memorial Day commemoration organized by a group of Black people freed from enslavement less than a month after the Confederacy surrendered in 1865.” -
Lest we forget - we owe a debt of gratitude to the servicewomen and servicemen who paid the ultimate sacrifice. We honor you today and everyday! 🇺🇸

I lived in Watertown, Mass for almost 20 years and was the lucky recipient of the love and rich culture my friends, neighbors, and co-workers gave so freely. That's why I was always baffled by the U.S.’ denial of the . Today President Biden, in a statement, recognized the atrocities suffered by Armenians at the hand of the Ottoman Empire for what they were; a . President Joe Biden’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide coincides with the 106th commemoration of the 1915 killings of 1.5 million Armenian civilians. On this historic day, Biden joins 29 nations in calling those atrocities a genocide, making him the first American President to recognize the Armenian Genocide. Thank you, President Biden! 🙏🏾💙

Dear Gianna buttercup,

May warm memories of your dad fill your heart always.

May you remember the man who loved you and changed the world.

May you be love even when the world has shown you hate.

May you be all that God has created you to be.

May the joy of the Lord be your strength always.

We love you! Your dad loved you! You are loved!

Brunch at Sofra and a walk at Mt. Auburn Cemetery with my beautiful friend June was what I needed - after an emotionally draining week.
******
The diversity at the cemetery reminded me of the song in one of my favorite movies , which I shared with June.

“[Prince Edward]
Good kings, bad kings
Sane kings or mad kings
Benevolent or nefarious
Here is where they bury us

Oh ho ho
What a comforting thing to know
There's a prearranged spot in the family plot
Where my royal bones will go
Yes, I'll be slipped into the beautiful family crypt
Oh ho ho
What a comforting thing to know.......

And here lies brave King Rofar
[Prince Edward]
All the battles that he won
[John]
He lies in state, serene and great
[Prince Edward]
Still getting nothing done

John]
What about King Lloyd?
[Prince Edward]
King Lloyd, King Lloyd

King Lloyd was lewd and lecherous
Evil, cruel, and treacherous
King Lloyd was mad and dreaded
Till the day he was beheaded

But remember good King Phineous
Saintly, kind, and wise
He did nothing ignominious
Yet beside these noble brutes and knaves And drunks and skunks he lies......”
Anyway, I share this to say that whether you have a gorgeous family crypt or a simple tombstone with your name and 2 dates, the only important thing is how you lived and how you are are remembered.
Let’s live well
Love God and His people
Love life, peace, and justice - what a beautiful way to be remembered ❤️ @ Mount Auburn Cemetery
Thank you, June for a beautiful

My heart breaks for a generation of whose dads have been murdered by police. My heart breaks for the whose or are chiefs of aiding and abetting these murderers. The onus is on every , , , , , and ALL of us to put an end to - I pray that they never feel the pain of losing a or because someone “accidentally” shot them.
My soul is raging like an angry ocean with angry waves beating and angry winds blowing against - against - against the prison walls holding . I say to it, “Peace be still,” but where there’s there’s .

Two Sundays ago, my friend June and I went for a refreshing walk on the Greenway Trail. (The felled trees are from the last storm we had, emphasizing that “no trespassing warning” from the city”😳) The climactic moment of our time together was meeting Widget who lays green eggs. And not far from the scene was Rupert the rooster. I get so excited about eggs from June’s hen pen. I thoroughly enjoyed my green eggs and ham.😋 Thanks June! ❤️

This Women's History Month, I thought I'd share a story about a Pandemic Shero, who happens to be my sister.
Efrance Kasana, RN, and Health Services Director at The Parc at Harbor View is being hailed a local hero because while many feared to enter the rooms of COVID-19 stricken residents at the facility, she dove right in, fully clad in her PPE, to make sure that her patients were comfortable because they were in isolation. She would reassure them that they were going to be okay, take their temperature, and proceed to meet their healthcare needs as their situations changed.
I couldn't be prouder of you, Efrance ! Grateful for you and all the professionals on the frontline, fighting to keep us safe. 🙏🏾❤️❤️❤️

Happy to all the amazing in my life. To the world-changers, the ceiling breakers, the influencers, the moms, grandmothers, aunties, and all those I haven't met yet - I salute you! Here’s a little note to remind you that there’s no one else like you! 😘

Today, I’d like to celebrate my mom and remember my Grandma aka jajja who passed away last Friday. Jajja Sebalu was a matriarch in our family, a larger-than-life force to be reckoned with. As a trained nurse she healed, as a Bridal entrepreneur she made Brides’ dreams come true, and as a grandmother and great jajja, she made ALL of us feel special. Rest well jajja 🙏🏾 We’ll miss U🖤

Pic 2) L-R, Mom and jajja (dad is the background with his briefcase next to him). They were traveling and bumped into jajja at the airport in London.
Pic 3) Jajja has her eye on me and hand on my hip. Not sure why I was making that face 🤦🏾‍♀️ but she was listening tenderly to all my reasons why I probably didn't want to be in the photo.
