Named for John King Fairbank 費正清 (1907-1991), the leadin

g figure in 20th-century American Chinese studies, the Fairbank Center directly supports research and teaching at Harvard University. In addition to maintaining a specialized library for contemporary China research, the Center administers faculty research projects, offers student grants for language study, and supports field research, conference travel, and interdisciplinary training for doctoral students. The Center also provides grants for the publication of prize-winning new scholarship on China. Every year, the Fairbank Center runs an active program of seminars, workshops, and conferences, which provide lively forums for inquiry and debate. Participants include the Center’s more than 200 faculty and affiliates, along with more than 150 doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and professionals, from the United States and all parts of the Chinese world, as well as from Japan, Korea, Australia, and Europe.
