The Town of White Creek remembers former Town Supervisor Don Cummings (1933-2026) and his long career in public service.

Donald A. Cummings, 92, a longtime resident of Cambridge, died Saturday, March 28, 2026, at his home of the past 6 years the Home of the Good Shepherd in Wilton.

Born October 18, 1933 in Alps, NY, he was the son of the late William Kenneth Cummings and Dorothy (Hoffman) Cummings.

Don is also predeceased by his brother Kenneth Cummings and sister Esther Baker. He attended school in Averill Park, NY.

Don’s life had two undeniable anchors – love of family and commitment to community. As a young adult, he proudly served in the United States Air Force for 4 years. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, Don was a meat cutter for the A&P in Cambridge for nearly 3 decades. He then became the proud owner of McWhorter’s Market with the name subsequently changed to Cambridge IGA and eventually Cummings IGA. He enjoyed a 20+ year run during which time he built a thriving business and devoted considerable time and resources to local services and support programs.

After “retirement,” Don worked part-time for Carmody Ford in both Greenwich and Hoosick Falls for many years.
Don was also involved in many forms of community service. He was an 8-year member of the Cambridge Village Board of Trustees. He was the Supervisor of the Town of White Creek for many years. Due to his affinity for the job, he was elected as the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Washington County by his fellow town supervisors. He also served on the Board of Directors for Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge, including 2 years as President. Don was a charter member of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the American Legion Post 634 for over 50 years and a very active member of both the Cambridge Lion’s Club and Knights of Columbus.

As a result of his years of dedication to Cambridge and local communities, Don received numerous awards for community service, among them the New York State Liberty Bell Award and honors from the state Senate and Assembly. He is also an honorary lifetime member of the Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad.

Despite all of these activities, Don always prioritized time for family. He was the devoted husband of Janet (Mckernon) Cummings for over 50 years prior to her death in 2012. In his wife’s later years, he was dedicated to her care and comfort both at home and at the Nursing and Rehab Center of Hoosick Falls where he was a strong daily presence at her bedside. He also enjoyed watching his sons play sports in school. From his time stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, he developed a love for the frontier state and returned later in life for yearly fishing trips with his family for almost 20 years.

He enjoyed golf and was a lifetime New York Yankees fan. Despite physical limitations in his last decade of life, Don continued to greet family and friends with open arms and good conversation.

Survivors include his sons Richard (Patricia) Cummings of Lake Placid, NY, James (Sandra) Cummings of Doylestown, PA and John (Stacey) Cummings of Glen Mills, PA. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Erin, Jess, Katie, Elise, Matthew and Devin Cummings.

Friends may call on Friday, April 10, 2026 from 4 to 7 pm at Flynn Brothers, Inc. Funeral Home, 80 Main St., Greenwich, NY, 12834.

A funeral mass will be held at 1 pm Saturday, April 11, 2026 at St Patrick’s Church in Cambridge with the Rev. James Walsh officiating. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

Memorials can be made in Don’s memory to the Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad, the American Legion or St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cambridge.

Online remembrances can be made at www.flynnbrosinc.com
