🚨 Grain Bin Safety Training Thanks 🚨

The Cambridge City Fire Department would like to extend a huge thank you to Keystone Cooperative for providing critical training to local departments on grain bin extrication and grain dryer fires. This hands-on training is an essential resource for rural departments like ours.

We’re proud to share that five of our CCVFD members took part in this training. While we hope we never need to use these skills, the knowledge gained was incredibly valuable.

📍 Why it matters:
Indiana ranks #5 in the nation for corn production—but unfortunately, we're #1 in grain bin rescues. With this reality, safety education and preparedness are more important than ever. July and August also see the most grain bin incidents.

🚨 Grain Bin Safety 101 🚨

Grain can act like quicksand—engulfment can happen in seconds.

NEVER enter a grain bin alone. Always have a trained observer and safety harness system in place.

Turn off all grain-moving equipment before entering.

🛑 If you find yourself in a grain bin emergency:

1. Yell for help immediately.

2. Try to stay upright and avoid struggling.

3. If you're an observer, do not jump in—call 911 and keep eyes on the victim.

4. First responders will use specialized equipment like grain bin rescue tubes to isolate and remove grain around the victim safely.

👨‍🚒 What is a Grain Bin Rescue Tube?
These are life-saving devices designed to be lowered around a trapped individual to stabilize the grain and allow for careful removal. They are now a critical tool in rural rescue operations.

Thank you again to Keystone Cooperative for supporting the safety of our firefighters and farming community. With the right training and tools, we can respond smarter and safer.
