📣 CALUMET BUSINESSES: Let’s show the U.P. what we have to offer!

The Village of Calumet and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) are excited to share an exclusive opportunity to participate in WLUC TV6’s new “Around Town” campaign featuring Calumet!

Participating businesses will receive:

✅ A professionally produced 15-second commercial
✅ Daily advertising across multiple TV6 news broadcasts
✅ A business listing and link on TV6’s “Around Town” webpage
✅ 500 TV6 livestream advertising impressions each month

💲 Cost: $400 per month for November and December—a two-month commitment totaling $800, reduced from the standard $850 monthly rate.

The campaign also includes a 30-minute Calumet show airing on Upper Michigan Today in November and streaming on TV6+!

This opportunity is open exclusively to businesses located in the Village of Calumet—and it’s for more than retail! Manufacturers, technology companies, service businesses, and other local businesses are encouraged to participate.

❄️ WE’RE HIRING: SEASONAL EQUIPMENT OPERATORS ❄️

The Village of Calumet is hiring two Equipment Operators to help our Department of Public Works keep Calumet moving this winter.

🚜 CDL Class B position: $22–$23/hour, based on experience
🚜 Non-CDL position: $20–$22/hour, based on experience

Both positions require snow-removal and equipment-operation experience. Work includes plowing, grading, loading and hauling snow, along with basic equipment care and other DPW duties.

Season: Approximately November 1–April 30
Typical hours: Monday–Friday, 2:00–10:00 a.m. Additional hours may be needed during storms, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

If you’re dependable, comfortable working in Upper Peninsula winter conditions and take pride in serving your community, we’d like to hear from you.

Following years of community fundraising, Calumet marked a milestone on Aug. 22 with the unveiling of a 900-pound bronze statue honoring 1913 Copper Strike activist Anna “Big Annie” Clemenc.

We are seeking a licensed contractor to install our newly completed mural at the Village of Calumet's Calumet Commons Park. It is a four-panel construction that we hope to install on vertical posts. This morning, we had some volunteers from our new Village of Calumet Beautification Group mulch all of the garden beds in the Calumet Commons Park! The beds are looking great and should hold more moisture now.

We plan to meet again next month to move some plants to better locations for them to thrive next summer.

🏠 CONTRACTORS WANTED: AGASSIZ PARK PAVILION ROOF PROJECT

The Village of Calumet is seeking proposals from qualified roofing contractors for replacement of the Agassiz Park Pavilion roof.

As we continue working on improvements to the pavilion and public restrooms, replacing the aging roof is an important part of protecting this historic community building for years to come.

🔨 Project includes:
• Removal of existing roofing
• New underlayment, ice and water protection, drip edge and architectural shingles
• Necessary flashing and ventilation work
• Inspection of roof decking and pricing for any needed repairs
• Cleanup and disposal

📅 PROPOSALS DUE: SEPTEMBER 10, 2026

The town put a clock tower on it. That tells you what Calumet thought it was building in 1900, because a clock tower is not something you add to a room where people watch plays. It is something you add to a building you expect to be looked at.

The village owned it outright. It opened March 20, 1900, with a touring Broadway production, 1,200 seats, murals on a vaulted ceiling and an electric chandelier. Then the performers came. Sarah Bernhardt played Calumet. So did John Philip Sousa, Lillian Russell, Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Lon Chaney Sr., and Frank Morgan, who would be the man behind the curtain in The Wizard of Oz. The touring circuits followed the money, and in 1900 the money was here.

The copper declined, the movies arrived, and for decades it survived as a movie house. The auditorium was restored in 1975 for the village centennial. It runs about sixty events a year now, in front of about eighteen thousand people, in a village a fraction of the size it was when the doors opened.
