The Borough Building (225 3rd Street) will be open this evening from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM as a cooling station for anyone in need.

Residents are welcome to stop by to cool off, charge phones and other essential devices, and take a break from the heat.

As many residents continue to deal with power outages, please keep the following safety tips in mind:

Food Safety
• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible.
• A full freezer can keep food frozen for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if half full).
• When in doubt, throw it out. Do not consume food that may have reached unsafe temperatures.

Downed Power Lines
• Stay far away from any downed power lines and assume they are energized.
• Report downed lines immediately to 911 and your utility company.
• Keep children and pets away from the area.

Staying Cool
• Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
• Limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
• Utilize cooling centers, air-conditioned public buildings, or other safe locations if needed.

Check on Others
• Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and those with medical conditions.
• Offer assistance if it is safe to do so.
• Ensure pets have access to shade and fresh water.

Property Damage and Insurance
• Use caution around damaged trees, limbs, and structures.
• Watch for hanging branches that may fall unexpectedly.
• Document any storm damage with photographs before beginning cleanup, if it is safe to do so.
• Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to report any damage and discuss available coverage.
• Some homeowners insurance policies may provide reimbursement for food spoiled during a prolonged power outage. Contact your insurance carrier to determine whether your policy includes this coverage.
• Do not attempt to remove trees or limbs that are in contact with power lines. Notify the utility company and avoid the area.

Generator Safety
• Never operate a generator inside a home, garage, basement, or enclosed area.
• Keep generators outdoors and away from windows and doors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Please remain patient as utility crews continue restoration efforts. If you encounter an emergency, call 911 immediately. Stay safe and look out for one another

The California United Methodist Church, located at 227 Third Street (next to the California Borough Building), will be open from 1:00 PM until midnight and will be available as a cooling center for anyone in need.

California Borough Police Department Update:

We spoke with a representative from West Penn Power, who advised that approximately 25 crews are being deployed throughout California and the surrounding areas to assist with power restoration efforts.

At this time, West Penn Power is hopeful that power will be restored to all affected customers by Wednesday; however, that timeline is not guaranteed and could change as crews continue their assessments and repairs.

The representative also indicated that a small tornado may have touched down between California and Ellsworth during the storm. This has not been officially confirmed at this time.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and will share additional updates as they become available.

Tornado warning alert tours the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a tornado warning for Northwestern Fayette County in Southwestern Pennsylvania, southeastern Washington County, and Southwestern Pennsylvania, southwestern West Moreland County, and southwestern Pennsylvania, until 315 p.m. EDT, at 244 p.m. EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Bunnyville, or 13 miles south of Gastonville, moving used at 50 miles per hour, hazard, tornado, source, radar Indicated rotation, impact, flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed, damaged to roofs, windows and vehicles will occur, tree damage is likely, locations impacted include. Connellsville, Monas, and California, Mount Pleasant, Scottdale, Charleroi, Bentleyville, Brownsville, Periopolis, North Bel Vernon, North Charleroi, Spears, Bel Vernon, Ellsworth, Linwood Pricedale, West Brownsville, Roscoe, Everson, and Deanston, instructions moved to an interior room on the lowest floor of a well built building away from windows.
