St. Mary's County Metropolitan Commission

St. Mary's County Metropolitan Commission MetCom has been faithfully serving St. Mary's County, Maryland since 1964. We are the St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission, also known as MetCom. We serve St.

We are the public water and sewer utility for St. Mary’s County. MetCom serves certain areas of St. Mary’s County in accordance with the County’s planning and growth initiatives. MetCom is an independent, quasi-governmental, not for profit entity, created by the State legislature in 1957. MetCom is not a department of the St. Mary’s County government and is supported exclusively by its ratepayers,

without any contribution from County tax revenues. We are 97 employees serving approximately 17,000 residential and 850 commercial customers. MetCom operates 28 water supply and distribution systems throughout the County. We maintain over 281 miles of water lines/mains, 67 wells, 39 ground based storage tanks, 18 water towers and 55 water pumping stations. We deliver a daily average of approximately 1.3 million gallons of safe drinking water to our customers. We maintain 293 miles of sanitary sewer lines, 66 wastewater pumping stations and five waste water treatment plants, the largest of which is the Marlay-Taylor Water Reclamation Facility. Marlay-Taylor serves the Lexington Park, Hollywood, Piney Point and St. George Island areas of the County. MetCom’s four other wastewater treatment plants are located throughout the County from Airedele Road in Ridge to Wicomico Shores in the north end of the County. Additionally, we manage two private sewage treatment facilities under operating agreements with the owners of those facilities. Combined, these sewage treatment facilities treated an average of over 1.6 billion gallons of waste per day during fiscal year 2022. The Metropolitan Commission operates under Section 113 of the St. Mary’s County Code and is governed by a board of commissioners consisting of seven voting members and one non-voting member representing the Patuxent Naval Air Station. Voting members of this board represent the election district in which they reside and are appointed by the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County, serving up to two three-year terms. The MetCom Board meets on the 4th Thursday of each month at 3:00 p.m. at the Administrative Offices located at 23121 Camden Way, California, Maryland and meetings are open to the public. Anyone who wishes to be placed on the agenda to speak to the Board should contact the Commission at 301.737.7400. The monthly agenda can be viewed on our website. MetCom’s mission is to provide safe, clean drinking water and to treat wastewater according to State and federal standards and regulations. Service areas are identified by the growth and planning objectives of the County as established by the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County, the Planning Commission and the office of Land Use and Growth Management. In some instances, public sewer service may be extended to certain areas identified by the Health Department as areas of comprehensive septic failures, to prevent a public health hazard. We are MetCom. Mary’s and are part of your community. We are your water and sewer provider. We are committed to providing quality, reliable services to St. We take great pride in providing outstanding customer service while maintaining high standards of environmental compliance and resource management consistent with federal and state laws.
