Needing to slow down, reconnect, or reduce overwhelm?

Here’s why going to hot springs is the perfect thing…

Research shows that people who spend time viewing natural bodies of water demonstrate an increase in positive feelings of a sense of slowing down, reconnection with self, and reduction in overwhelm.

Another study that looked at outdoor environments found that time spent around water was linked to better mental health outcomes than time spent around green space alone.

The results showed lower stress levels, better mood, and an increased sense of feeling ‘reset’; the feeling that people often seek when they choose to spend time outside.

If you ask us, that tracks. These healing hot springs alongside what is now called Deer Creek have pulled people in for centuries, long before anyone had the data to explain why.

We’re excited for when you can come experience this sense of reset and reconnection for yourself!

A Mother Spring is where water originates when it emerges from the earth.

We put a lot of effort into making the Mother Spring at California Hot Springs accessible with our new bridge.

It was a heart-led decision to ensure guests at California Hot Springs have the chance to see the Mother Spring and experience what it’s like to offer respect.

Another aspect of wanting to create access to this special spot was that it is practical!

The new bridge will not only act as a way to cross over Deer Creek, but it will hold the specialty piping that carries the hot spring water from our 9 source springs into the pools.

What we’re cultivating at California Hot Springs is designing for the practical, ritual, and for environmental stewardship, and this bridge reflects that.

We look forward to watching you walk across this bridge as you enjoy the babble of Deer Creek and feel the power of connection with the waters.

Our most important decision explained: why we replaced the big pool with smaller ones

We love large bodies of water just as much as everyone else.

This particular precious place on earth only provides a finite amount of water each day, so with current California health regulations, we had two choices:

The first was to keep the historic recirculating large pool and continue treating the water again and again with acid and chlorine to keep it sanitary.

We believe our spring water is a living, sacred resource — we value leaving it untouched exactly as the earth made it.

So, we chose the second option - to design a series of smaller “flow-through pools” where the water is constantly circulating through and being refreshed with new spring water every 6 hours. No need for any chemicals or additives!

The water that flows through the soaking pools goes back into the ecosystem - used for food and landscape irrigation and to fill our fire pond. These uses also needed untreated water, another reason we can’t add chemicals.

We still maintained a lap-lane in the larger pool for those of us who enjoy swimming instead of soaking.

Forest bathing, or Shinrin-yoku, is about being in relationship with the forest through your senses

This could look like: noticing the wind cooling your skin, the scent of pine and earth bringing you into the present moment, the quiet rhythms of the land recalibrating something that is hard to name…
that’s forest bathing

And lucky for us, California Hot Springs Resort is nestled amongst giant sequoias trees, some of the oldest living beings on Earth, with the oldest known trees reaching up to 3,266 years

The Sequoia landscape has been home to Indigenous communities for thousands of years, who lived in direct relationship with these forests, understanding them as living systems to be respected, tended, and learned from.

And now there is science that speaks to what people have always known:
Time spent immersed in forests can lower cortisol, support immune function, down-regulate our reactivity, and restore mental clarity through presence.

When you come to visit us, we hope to hear how spending time immersed under these ancient canopies supports your wellbeing, and how you can carry that with you in your every day routine

The main lodge has existed here as a community gathering space since 1923, when it was built as the dance hall for an old hotel.

And after all this time, it has been through a handful of iterations and changes; while retaining its innate beauty and uniqueness.

To honor this, we are preserving the charming characteristics of the main lodge while also giving it a luxurious facelift!

What did that mean for the team? Careful and precise demo!

Pictured here is our team member, Gabriel, jackhammering some of the extremely hard granite to make room for our new, more spacious locker rooms.

What is Watsu? It can feel a little something like this…

Before beginning there was a quiet introduction, a few words about breath, trust, and allowing the water to do what it’s designed to do.

From there I was guided into a floating position, ears slipping just beneath the surface as the outside world softened into a low, distant hum.

Watsu—short for water shiatsu—combines elements of massage, joint mobilization, and assisted stretching, all held within warm water that supports the body completely, removing pressure from the spine and joints.

As one arm is cradled, then the other, and before I can anticipate the movement, my body is already being gently carried through the water in slow, rhythmic patterns.

My spine lengthens without effort as I’m extended, then gathered back in; subtle rotations unwinding through my hips and shoulders, areas in my body that had held tension without me realizing it until then.

The warmth increases circulation and the buoyancy reduces muscular guarding, I soon felt my nervous system begin to shift out of its state of alertness.

My breath naturally gets deeper, syncing with the movement. Each exhale met with a soft transition into the next shape, each inhale creating space from within.

There were moments of stillness where I was simply held, weightless, suspended, and others where I was rocked, spiraled, opened, closed…
each movement designed to gently release tension.

At California Hot Springs Resort, you’ll have an opportunity to experience Watsu for yourself. It is often used to support relaxation, improve mobility, and regulate the nervous system.

Among the sensations—temperature, pressure, movement—is the quiet, steady experience of being supported without needing to do anything in return..

Happy Summer from California Hot Springs Resort!

This is what it looks like when a place gets rebuilt from the ground up, and what a learning experience it has been for our team.

If you don't know about California Hot Springs Resort yet, it's a stretch of land out in the Southern Sierras where natural hot springs have been drawing folks in for over a century.

What makes us unique? We are not your typical resort.

We crave more than cookie-cutter luxury; what's being built out here is something different:
⟡ restorative soaking
⟡ stewardship of the land, and how we can be in relationship with it
⟡ a community-centered place, where we keep one another supported and responsible
⟡ real education around water and land care, because the how and the why can be applied wherever we individually call home

We are merging comfort and beauty with presence and gratitude.

The vision is to create a space where people can experience restoration through nature, shared care, and intentional living practices.

This includes regenerative hospitality, environmental stewardship, and spaces for reflection, learning, and gathering.

Right now there's a crew out here putting in the work; tearing out, building up, getting this place ready for its next chapter.

Imagine this: you’re arriving at California Hot Springs for a weekend getaway.

As the winding road brings you close, you see the charcoal lodge come into view, framed by bright pink flowers, hummingbirds moving between them, butterflies catching the light. You might find you’re already grinning cheek to cheek!

You park your car, step out, and instantly are uplifted by a soft breeze and the rushing sounds of Deer Creek.

As you enter the lodge, to check in, the 26 foot wood beam ceilings and walls lined with windows give a sweeping sense of spaciousness.

As you admire the main lodge, your eyes are drawn to hand painted designs on the wood posts and beams.

You notice cozy, welcoming lounge spaces to ground in with a cup of tea and a nourishing restaurant in the back, with tables overlooking the creek.

This gathering space is where you get to ground, reset, and start your journey to the pools below for your first soak.

You may immediately feel the sense of giddiness and anticipation overcome you as you move straight for the locker room, continuing your way to the natural hot or cold spring water pools!

However you’re moved to begin exploring this impeccable space, we look forward to hearing how the charm that is embedded within the bones of this building influences you as they have us!

Each day, we become closer to sharing this space with you all again.
