The U.S. Army is pushing the boundaries of drone technology with two innovative systems, the Skydio X10D and Ghost-X, which are currently undergoing field tests. Unlike the large, theater-level drones like the MQ-9 Reaper, these smaller, tactical drones are designed for use at the company and battalion levels, providing valuable situational awareness for ground troops.
The Skydio X10D:
This short-range reconnaissance drone is optimized for dismounted infantry and scout patrols. With a flight time of 30 minutes and a range of up to 3.1 miles, the X10D is packed with advanced features, including onboard AI, thermal imaging, and high-resolution cameras. Its AI capabilities enable automatic obstacle avoidance, real-time mapping, and object tracking, making it a highly portable, low-cost tool for enhancing mission success in challenging environments.
The Ghost-X:
Designed for medium-range reconnaissance, the Ghost-X offers a 75-minute flight time and a 15.5-mile range. It can autonomously detect, classify, and track vehicles and personnel while navigating terrain without operator input. With the ability to carry up to 20 pounds of payload, the Ghost-X supports a wide variety of sensors for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. Its ease of use and rapid deployment make it a game-changer for ground-level commanders needing real-time intelligence in contested areas.
If these systems prove effective, they could undergo further modifications to meet mission-specific needs. By integrating these drones, the U.S. Army aims to enhance situational awareness, improve mission outcomes, and minimize risks to personnel on the ground.
