Today we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Sharing a very interesting story…

Women have always fought battles that history tried to overlook. The story of Graciela Olmos “La Bandida” reminds us that women have carried families, communities, revolutions, businesses, and dreams on their shoulders for generations.

As we recently celebrated our 118th Anniversary of the Calexico Woman’s Improvement Club, we also celebrate the power, resilience, and determination of women who continue to make a difference in our communities every single day. For over a century, women have come together to lead, uplift, educate, and create change proving that when women unite, powerful things happen.

Today, women are still fighting for respect, equality, opportunities, and to have their voices heard. Let this serve as a reminder that strong women have always existed, and because of them, we continue pushing forward for future generations.

Reminder to all “Women Are Power”.

Her real name was Marina Aedo. But history knows her as Graciela Olmos — "La Bandida." Born in 1895 in Chihuahua, she lived ten lifetimes in one. Most people have never heard her name. That ends today.

AT 12 YEARS OLD, she was orphaned when the Mexican Revolution tore through her home. She ended up in a convent in Irapuato with nothing. The Revolution had taken everything.

Then Pancho Villa's División del Norte rolled into town.

She fell in love with a revolutionary called "El Bandido," married him, left the convent, and became a soldadera — marching, fighting, and surviving alongside Villa's troops. That's how she earned her name: La Bandida. At the Battle of Celaya in 1915, her husband was killed. The Revolution took from her twice.

What happened next is where it gets truly wild.

⚔️ WIDOWED at 19, she changed her name and headed to Chicago during Prohibition — where she linked up with Al Capone's bootlegging network and became one of the first Mexican women in cross-border alcohol smuggling.

🎩 When U.S. authorities got too close, she cut her hair, disguised herself as a man, and crossed the border back into Mexico with $46,000 cash in a briefcase. Que mujer.

🏛️ With that money she built "La Casa de La Bandida" in Colonia Condesa, Mexico City — a legendary meeting place visited by Octavio Paz, Diego Rivera, Agustín Lara, and future presidents. She also gave the women who worked for her classes in literature, gymnastics, and swimming.

🎵 She composed nearly 200 corridos. Her most famous — "Siete Leguas" — honored Pancho Villa's legendary horse. She launched the careers of Los Panchos, Marco Antonio Muñiz, and Álvaro Carrillo. She literally handed Marco Antonio Muñiz a guitar and told him to go be great. He did.

❤️ She died in 1962 at 66 — having quietly funded an orphanage for years. The woman who survived a revolution, Prohibition, and the underworld spent her final years making sure no child went without.

She moved between worlds few women could enter — the battlefield, the borderlands, the music halls, the underworld, and the salons of Mexico's elite. And she never asked permission for any of it.

It's WHRC Wednesday! We're in the middle of Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4-8, 2026) so let's take a look at a few of the many, many GFWC members and leaders who were also educators. To narrow our choices down to a manageable number, we looked for club founders who were born in the 19th century ... and it was still a large number, so we chose four of them to share with you today. Clockwise from top left:

Helen A. Whittier (1846-1925), founder and first president of the Middlesex Woman's Club (Massachusetts), and President of the Massachusetts Federation, 1904-1907. An art teacher, she took over her father's textile mill in 1888 but returned to teaching in later years.

Maria de Lopez (1881-1977), founder of the Woman's City Club of Los Angeles, and active in many other clubs. A dedicated educator, she taught English as a second language in high school before becoming a professor at UCLA.

Anna J.H. Pennybacker (1861-1938), founder of the Tyler Woman's Club (Texas) who made her way up through the ranks to serve as GFWC President, 1912-1916. She was a teacher both before and after her marriage, and wrote a textbook, "A New History of Texas for Schools," in 1900.

Elizabeth Bender Cloud (1888-1965), founder of the Oregon Trail Woman's Club (Oregon) and the only Native American woman to serve as GFWC Chairman of Indian Affairs at the national level, 1950-1954. She trained as a teacher at the Hampton Institute, and taught at schools on several reservations as well as the Carlisle Indian School.

Check the comments for links to learn more about these women, and please let us know about teachers in your club, historic or present-day!
