With another round of storms forecasted tonight we would like to share this information on siren activation in Allegan county.

What triggers siren activation in Allegan County?

It is Allegan County policy to activate outdoor warning sirens when winds are at or in excess of 70 mph. This includes tornado warnings, severe thunderstorm warnings with extreme wind speeds, or any other event where winds are expected to reach that threshold. When sirens sound, go inside immediately and seek additional information.

🚨 OUTDOOR WARNING SIRENS β€” YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED! 🚨

We get a lot of questions about our outdoor warning sirens, so we've put together answers to the most common ones. Save this post for future reference!

❓ What are outdoor warning sirens used for?
Outdoor warning sirens are designed to alert people who are OUTSIDE to go inside and seek additional information. They are activated during life-threatening emergencies such as tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, or other hazardous weather events.

❓ Can I hear the siren from inside my home?
Sirens are NOT designed to be heard indoors. If you're inside, rely on a NOAA Weather Radio, your local TV/radio station, or a weather alert app on your phone for warnings.

❓ Why do sirens sometimes go off when the sky looks clear?
Sirens may be activated based on radar-confirmed rotation or a tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service β€” even if severe weather isn't visible yet in your immediate area. Always take every activation seriously!

❓ What should I do when I hear a siren?
Go inside and seek additional information right away! Tune in to your NOAA Weather Radio, local TV or radio station, or a trusted weather app to find out what is happening in your area and what steps you should take.

❓ What triggers siren activation in Allegan County?
It is Allegan County policy to activate outdoor warning sirens when winds are at or in excess of 70 mph. This includes tornado warnings, severe thunderstorm warnings with extreme wind speeds, or any other event where winds are expected to reach that threshold. When sirens sound, go inside immediately and seek additional information.

❓ How long do sirens sound during an emergency?
Sirens activate ONCE at the beginning of a warning and sound for approximately 3 minutes before timing out. They are NOT activated continuously throughout the duration of a warning. This means that once the siren stops, it does NOT mean the threat has passed β€” the warning may still be in effect. Always monitor your NOAA Weather Radio, local news, or weather app to know when a warning has been officially lifted.

❓ When are sirens tested?
Allegan County tests its outdoor warning sirens on the first Friday of every month. This routine testing ensures the sirens are fully operational and ready when it matters most. If you hear the sirens on the first Friday of the month, there is no emergency β€” it's just a test!

❓ Why didn't the siren go off during the last storm?
Sirens are only activated for specific criteria. Not every storm or watch will trigger them β€” only confirmed warnings or imminent threats meeting Allegan County's activation threshold.

❓ Do sirens automatically activate?
Allegan County sirens require manual activation by Allegan County Central Dispatch or Allegan County Emergency Management personnel.

What a great way to wrap up the school year!

Today, our firefighters had the opportunity to spend part of the day at Paris Ridge Elementary’s Field Day, giving students a chance to check out our fire trucks, tools, and equipment up close. We also helped everyone stay cool by providing some much-needed water fun as groups finished their Field Day activities.

It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces, answer questions about the fire service, and connect with students, staff, and families in our community. Thank you to Paris Ridge Elementary for inviting us to be part of such a fun event!

We hope everyone has a safe, happy, and well-deserved summer break! πŸš’πŸ’¦πŸ˜Ž

πŸš’ Training Night: Low-Angle Rescue Operations πŸš’

This week, Leighton firefighters participated in a low-angle rescue training exercise designed to strengthen our technical rescue and patient care skills. The training included establishing anchor points, utilizing rescue ropes and knots, safely lowering and raising rescuers, and packaging and treating a simulated downed victim.

These realistic scenarios allow our firefighters to practice critical techniques in a controlled environment, helping ensure we are prepared when called upon to assist in challenging rescue situations.

A special thank you to Allegan Central Dispatch helping make the training more realistic and effective. Working together strengthens our capabilities and enhances the service we provide to our communities.

Training like this builds confidence, sharpens skills, and reinforces our commitment to providing the highest level of service when emergencies happen.πŸš’πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
