University of Idaho Extension, Canyon County Master Gardeners Providing research-based information to help you successfully garden and landscape in Southwest Idaho! Happy gardening!

University of Idaho Extension Master Gardeners in Canyon County are committed to helping individuals and communities grow by providing research based information. Our horticulture areas of specialization include sustainable landscapes, home garden vegetable production, youth gardening and volunteer development. With the assistance of the Master Gardener Program Coordinator, our horticulture Extension Educator directs the program. Training for the Canyon County Master Gardener and Advanced Master Gardener is the equivalent of a three credit college class. A Sixteen week 40 hour classroom training teaching about the science of horticulture is followed up by a 40 hour practicum where volunteers apply what they learned in their training by sharing their research based knowledge with their communities. With the help of Master Gardener Volunteers, we provide no-cost horticulture education to thousands of children each year through Junior Master Gardener programs at the Nampa, Caldwell and Middleton public libraries and provide thousands of consumer clientele with research-based gardening expertise and problem solving, free of charge at our Plant Clinics and information booths. Have you ever found a pile like this around one of your trees?

This was found this week on an aspen in our area. That sawdust-like material is called frass—a mixture of wood fibers and insect waste pushed out by a wood-boring insect feeding inside the tree.

Fall can be a good time to take a closer look at tree trunks. As the growing season winds down, signs of borer activity may be easier to notice: frass or sawdust, sap or gum, staining, loose or damaged bark, and exit holes.

Borers aren’t limited to aspens. Different species can affect poplars and willows, ash and lilac, black locust, stone fruits, and other landscape trees.

One important point: finding frass tells you something is happening, but it doesn’t necessarily tell you which borer is responsible—or that fall is the right time to treat. Borer life cycles and treatment timing vary, so proper identification comes first.

So while you’re doing fall cleanup, take a minute to look at the trunks and bases of your trees. ~bk

SENIORS!! -- Only 3 weeks left to take advantage of the during the Caldwell Farm to Fork Market at Indian Creek Plaza.
As of week 7 on September 1st, volunteers had donated 1402.59 pounds of over 32 different kinds of produce! As of that time, the booth served an average of 104 seniors, who redeemed $804 in vouchers, since starting up the booth on July 14! ~dlc
