Green Mountain Labor Council

Green Mountain Labor Council We are working Vermonters standing together for economic and social justice.

We work to:

Build a broad movement of Vermont workers by helping workers join and form unions. Support Vermont workers as they bargain with employers to improve their living conditions and workplaces, as well as their communities, state and nation. Strengthen the voice of Vermont working families at all levels of government and in a changing global economy. Mobilize members and allies to get

involved with our unions and communities;
Involve working people in politics to lobby and hold candidates accountable;
Educate members and allies to meet the challenges we face;
and unite with community allies who are struggling for justice.

Todd Chretien on Aiming for Trump’s Achilles’ Heel: MAGA Before the Elections
Trump’s approval ratings are dismal, and the MAGA base is showing some cracks, but we should not underestimate their capacity to hold on to power through brute force. Centrist Democrats’ nostalgia for neoliberal normalcy is not enough to stop Trump 3.0.

And Ramy Khalil on How Working-Class Resistance Forced ICE Out of Minneapolis
A new generation of activists is challenging Donald Trump, reviving labor militancy, and scoring victories. Next stop: May Day 2026. https://podcast.show/3957103/episode/153793379/

NMC nurses deserve to be treated with dignity and respect!

NMC nurses deserve to be treated with dignity and respect!

Repost from our allies at AFT Vermont:

Sign the petition to stand in solidarity with NMC Nurses. Link in bio!

Nurses at Northwestern Medical Center formed a union almost 11 months ago and are negotiating their first contract. NMC management is refusing to move on central key bargaining priorities such as:

-- Staffing ratios that ensure every patient receives quality care, and nurses are able to attend to their basic needs throughout the day.

-- A sustainable on call system so that nurses providing critical care are well-rested.

-- A competitive starting wage that allows NMC to recruit and retain qualified nurses. The starting wage at UVM Medical Center is $10.33/hour higher than NMC -- a difference of 36%.

-- Policies that prevent workplace violence and provide care for nurses who experience violence during their shifts.

-- Policies that would prioritize local nurses' schedules and compensation over travel nurses.

Nurses' working conditions are patient's healing conditions. We need nurses who are respected, well-rested, safe, and can afford to live here!

🔔 An important update from City Market 🔔

We as a Co-op and a beacon of the Burlington community are deeply troubled by the ongoing disregard for civil rights that is happening in our country right now. In alignment with our cooperative values to support inclusivity and equity, we stand by all communities that are having their lives destroyed at the hands of our federal government.

Tomorrow, Friday, January 30, 2026, we will be close our doors from 3-4 p.m. to support the nationwide ICE OUT demonstrations. 🚫 City Market, Onion River Co-op stands by our neighbors across the country and shares the feelings of grief, fear, and anger at the injustice that continues to affect so many communities.

As always, we will continue every day to work to ensure our stores are a place that our Members, customers, staff and community feel safe and supported and also stand by what is over both of our entrance doors ‘All are Welcome.’

If you have any questions, please reach out to us at any time.

In cooperation and solidarity,

🧅 The City Market Team

Vermont AFSCME workers show the way!
THE GENERAL STRIKE & ANTI-FASCISM: LOCAL 1369 WORKERS AT WATERBURY SECURE RIGHT TO ENGAGE IN GENERAL STRIKE TO DEFEND DEMOCRACY
• Right To Engage In General Strike to Defend Democracy!
• Anti-Fascism As Core Union Principle!
• AFSCME Does Not Cross Picket Lines!
• Powerful & Robust Union Rights Secured!
• Waterbury Joins Ten Other AFSCME 93 VT Units In Securing Right To Throw Down The Tools Mid-Contract To Engage In Union Action!
Congratulations to Town of Waterbury workers organized within AFSCME Local 1369 for winning the best damn first Contract I have ever had the pleasure of helping to negotiate! This Collective Bargaining Agreement provides wage increases of 16%+ over four years, establishes a winter on-call system for Highway (paid at $225 per week), a shift differential for Library workers, two new paid holidays, and recognizes the Union’s legal right to engage in a General Strike in defense of democracy. With this, Waterbury (the 26th largest municipality in Vermont) joins AFSCME workers in the City of South Burlington as the first two AFL-CIO units in the nation who are contractually empowered to engage in political work stoppages in defense of our democracy.
