 After Make Music‘s announcement last August that Finale was being sundowned I made a plan, I bought a Mac mini, locked it down on macOS 14.7, loaded Finale 27.4 and all my templates and hot keys and put that box on a shelf….. just in case. Looking forward I bought Dorico and put July 2nd 2025 (a lull in the action) on my schedule to start learning it…. What a well thought out program….as I spend time infront of it I’m almost giddy about what it can do and how efficient it will be once I get the “muscle memory” down! You’re never too old to learn new things…if you’re a composer, arranger, orchestrator or copyist get on it…you won’t regret it!

And last but not least (and not for the faint of heart!) O Holy Night - Solo Trumpet and Orchestra...Commissioned by the Venice Symphony Orchestra this arrangement is based on the Tom Kubis chart featuring Wayne Bergeron on Flugel and Trumpet. I think it works really well for orchestra and will be an impressive add to any holiday concert if you've got the chops!

Hey the holidays are coming! Put some Mazel Tov! in your next Holiday Concert! This medley, which includes Ma'oz Tzur - (Rock Of Ages), S'vivon Sov - (Dreydl Spin), Mi Y'malel - (Who Can Retell), and Oh, Hanukka, Oh, Hanukka, works great with or without the optional SATB Chorus and should add a lot of fun and excitement to your holiday concert.

Happy Holidays! Had a great annual pilgrimage to Chicago for MidWest…but glad to be back in NC. Always great seeing old friends and colleagues as well as making new friends AND meeting band directors that buy and play my charts…a big thank you ….know that when I sit down to write a chart I am thinking about your students, their audience and how much rehearsal time you wish you had 🙂
