Did you know?
A vehicle that has been titled in Georgia (TAVT paid) that is given to an immediate family member (Spouse,Parent,Child,Sibling,Grandparent or Grandchild) is not subject to 7% TAVT. Form MV-16 (Family Affidavit) is used when a vehicle is given to a qualified immediate family member and the family member only has to pay 0.5% TAVT. If an out of state vehicle that Georgia TAVT has not been paid is involved then the full 7% TAVT must be paid. Individuals who move into Georgia from another state when registering their vehicles in Georgia must pay 3% TAVT. There you have the fun facts in this episode of "Did you know".

Good morning, I want to clear up a misconception about the first interest penalty that accrued on property tax bills. Monday February 16, 2026 was a Federal holiday. Interest was not accrued and applied until Tuesday February 17, 2026 after midnight on the 16th. No interest penalty was applied to property tax bills on the 16th.
Any payments we receive by mail after the 16th and post marked on or before the 16th my staff is removing those interest penalties manually as has always been done by this office by past and present Tax Commissioners. As always I am available to discuss any questions or concerns that citizens may have. My door is always open or you can call at 229-377-3322. Thank you, and don't forget to renew your tags if you have a birthday soon.

Friendly reminder, property taxes can be paid tomorrow 2/16/26 without interest penalty. We are open from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm.
As always my door is always open if you have questions or concerns. 229-377-3322.

Good afternoon, please share and spread the word that the Tax Commissioners office will be open this Friday 2/13/26 from 8AM to 5PM. This is the last Friday before property taxes are due. My property software company has made a change in our system that will also move the interest penalty date to 12:01AM on 2/17/26. Any property tax payment made by closing on Monday 2/16/26 will not accrue an interest penalty. As has always been done, any payment received in the mail after 2/16/26 and post marked before then the interest penalty accrued will be manually removed.

Had a great question posed to me about property tax bills having a Sunday due date and our office being closed. I intended on addressing this in my last post and forgot to.
Since the due date is on a Sunday, I got with my property software developer and they created a fix that will give taxpayers a grace period through Monday 2/16/26 to pay without an interest accrual at midnight 2/15/26. Also as in the past any payment dropped in the drop box over that weekend or any mail-in payments received after 2/16/26 but postmarked on or before 2/16/26 the interest accrual will be manually removed by my clerks. Please don't hesitate to call or come see me with any questions or concerns you have. My door is always open. Don't forget to renew your tags if you have a birthday coming up soon.

Good evening, it has been brought to my attention that there is some confusion regarding verbiage on our property tax bills pertaining to mortgage companies. Tax Commissioner offices do not know who has a mortgage and to whom they are owed to. Mortgage companies send electronic file requests to Tax Commissioners property software companies requesting copies of property tax bills that have escrow accounts. A property tax bill is mailed to the taxpayer for their records. Hindsight is 20/20 and some standard verbiage used by our software company and other Tax Commissioners offices has caused concerns about tax bills not being mailed to mortgage companies. I should have checked the verbiage more closely and changed it. I assure you nothing has changed, mortgage companies are getting copies of your bills the way they always have. I apologize for the undue stress this has caused.
One thing I will remind everyone of is, if you appealed your 2025 values with the Tax Assessors office you are being billed at 85% and that is what your mortgage company is paying (85% bill). I have an open door to anyone who has concerns, questions or suggestions. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and have a happy new year.

Good morning, just an update on the 2025 property tax bills. The printing and mailing was delayed a couple of days. We discovered that everyone who is still under appeal for 2024 that their 2025 bills were automatically marked as appealed as well. We only have 314 bills appealed for 2025 and there are approximately 800 bills still under appeal for 2024. Our software company removed the appeal status on 2025 bills that should not have been placed as appealed. This was corrected last week. Without correcting this those under appeal for 2024 and not 2025 would have received a bill for 85% as if they had appealed

Remember, you can go to gradyproperty.assurancegov.com to see your bill and pay online if you wish to.

Wishing each of you a Merry Christmas!!!

Good afternoon. Update on the 2025 property tax bills. The County Board of Commissioners and Grady County Board of Education will set their millage rates at their respective meetings on 12/2/25. The City of Cairo will set theirs 12/1/25 and City of Whigham on 12/9/25. The Board of Education has set their tentative millage at 11.8 and can not go higher. They are below the rollback rate. The City of Cairo has set a tentative millage rate at the rollback rate and Whigham has said they are going with the rollback rate. The County has not set a tentative millage rate but are considering going with the rollback rate. If all four are at rollback rate or less there will be no mandatory public hearings and the final digest will be submitted to the State of Georgia Department of Revenue shortly after the December 9th meeting of the City of Whigham. Once the State gives the green light they will give me a collection order and my office can start taking payments before you receive your bill in the mail.
