In 1976, the Florida A&M University Sports Hall of Fame was established through the vision of athletic director Hansel E. Tookes, Sr. On September 18, FAMU will commemorate the 50th anniversary of that historic initiative—honoring the very best in Rattler athletics, from student-athletes and coaches to devoted supporters.

The 50th Anniversary Class upholds that proud tradition of excellence, and we are honored to introduce the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026:

Football
William Evers was a four-year standout at defensive back, developing under the mentorship of Pro Football Hall of Famer Ken Riley. A two-time All-MEAC selection, Evers went on to begin his professional career with the Atlanta Falcons. He has since returned to FAMU following a distinguished law enforcement career, including FBI training, and now serves as Deputy Chief of the FAMU Police Department.

William Evers, a native of Cairo, Georgia, established himself as one of Florida A&M University’s premier defensive backs. Recruited by former FAMU coach Ken Riley, Evers was one of the first classes of defensive backs trained at FAMU under the Pro Football Hall of Famer.

The 6-foot, 177-pound cornerback was a four-year starter for the Rattlers from 1986 to 1989, appearing in 44 games and recording nine career interceptions. He led the team with five interceptions as a freshman and earned First-Team All-MEAC honors in 1986, 1987 and 1989, along with Second-Team recognition in 1988. Evers was also named a preseason All-American in 1987 and received MEAC Defensive Back of the Week honors four times.

Before arriving at FAMU, Evers was one of Georgia’s top Class AAA defensive-back prospects at Cairo High School. He helped lead the Syrupmakers to two region championships and earned First-Team All-State honors after recording a region-leading 10 interceptions during his senior season.

Evers continued his football career professionally, joining the Atlanta Falcons as a free agent and appearing on the active roster during the 1990 and 1991 seasons. He later signed with the Cleveland Browns before continuing his career in the Canadian Football League with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Shreveport Pirates.

The son of Margaret Evers, William proudly shares this honor with his wife, Laverne; sister, Yolanda; daughter, Hanniah; and son, Marcus Clayton.

Last year, Ms. Poppell attended a Project WET training and learned new ways to make science more interactive. This year, she brought that experience into her seventh-grade classroom through Project WET’s “The Incredible Journey.”

Students at Shiver became water molecules and traveled among nine stations representing places water is stored, including clouds, oceans, rivers, soil, plants, and animals. At each station, students rolled a cube to determine their next destination and collected a bead to track their journey.

Afterward, students used their bead journeys to record where their water traveled and identify processes such as evaporation, precipitation, runoff, infiltration, and transpiration.

This activity supported Georgia Science Standard S7L4.b by helping students model how water cycles between biotic and abiotic parts of an ecosystem. Using bead strands, students traced water through plants, animals, clouds, soil, rivers, lakes, glaciers, and oceans, showing that water can follow many different pathways. 💧🌎
