‼The combination of drying fuels, low relative humidity values, and breezy winds will result in elevated fire danger conditions across northern lower Michigan today.

💨Easterly winds will increase to around 10 mph this afternoon, with gusts around 20 mph. Relative humidity values between 20 and 30 percent are expected across most of northern Michigan. These conditions support the quick start and spread of wildfires, so be sure to take the proper precautions to prevent fires from starting.

🦜🌿 Happy World Parrot Day to these lovebirds!

Today we’re celebrating the colorful, charismatic parrots that brighten forests around the world — including right here in the United States.

El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. It’s home to the iconic Puerto Rican parrot, one of the rarest birds on Earth.

In 1975, the total Puerto Rican parrot population was down to 13 known individuals on the El Yunque, easily qualifying the parrot as one of the most endangered birds in the world.

Through a joint task force approach between the Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, the Puerto Rican parrot population has increased from 13 parrots to a total island-wide population of approximately 500 individuals. Partnerships are powerful!

For the southern Manistee Zone of the Huron-Manistee National Forest.

Warm and dry conditions will persist through the weekend. The next chance for rain will be late next week. Couple those conditions with gusty winds and there is a recipe for any fire's to get out of control. Please be careful and check local burning restrictions. The biggest area of concern is along and north of the US 10 corridor.

Clear skies tonight will lead to chilly overnight temperatures along with the potential of some patchy frost across interior Northern Lower areas. Sunny and quiet weather is expected to continue through the midweek with highs in the 70s and 80s for most locations.

🌡💧💨 CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER UPDATE

Elevated fire danger is in place across northern Michigan again
today.

Minimum RHs between 20-30 % are anticipated across many
areas of interior northern lower Michigan from late morning into
this evening.

Lowest RH readings -- perhaps dipping into the teens
locally -- are expected across parts of northwest lower with
down sloping east winds, including the Manistee Zone of the Huron-Manistee-National Forest.

These 20 ft winds between 5-10 mph may gust to 15-20 mph at times
through this afternoon. Afternoon temperatures will range from the
low to mid 60s against the Lake Huron shoreline to the mid/upper 70s
across northwest lower.

Rain-free weather appears it will continue
through the middle of next week with little airmass change, keeping
near-critical/critical RHs, continued drying of fuels, and
associated fire weather concerns in the forecast over the next
several days.

VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER INDICIES across the forest mean sparks can ignite fires that have the potential to spread rapidly and have a quick increase in intensity, right after ignition. Small fires can quickly become large fires and exhibit extreme fire intensity, such as long-distance spotting and fire whirls. These fires can be difficult to control and will often become much larger and longer-lasting fires.
