Surprise Revealed at Our Spring Cemetery Clean-Up!

June's spring clean-up at Morningstar Tabernacle No. 88 Moses Cemetery was remarkable—not only because the site looks great, but because our dedicated volunteers made an extraordinary discovery. A small but mighty group worked especially hard clearing overgrown vegetation in one area of the site and uncovered a rare marked grave: the resting place of Milton Steward, who died on April 20, 1925.

Because there are so few marked graves at Morningstar Moses Cemetery, discovering a previously undocumented burial is deeply meaningful. This surprise was a moving and rewarding reminder of why this work matters.

While our late spring clean-ups are often less demanding than those in the fall, they bring their own challenges: brambles, bugs, and high temperatures. None of that slowed our volunteers down, and the site looks fantastic thanks to their hard work. We are so grateful for their energy, dedication, and camaraderie.

This clean-up was a perfect way to begin a meaningful week of Juneteenth celebrations—honoring legacy through action, stewardship, and care. Learn more about the resilient, historic Black communities in Montgomery County that grew out of enslavement.

This is the history of historic Black communities in Montgomery County, MD -- where they came from, where they went, and what they became. It is an ongoing research project.
