𝗕𝘆𝗿𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘆 & 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲

With all flags at half-staff at the 2026 Byron Memorial Day ceremony, the community gathered in solemn reflection and gratitude. This year’s 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿, 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗵, shared how deeply meaningful it was to return and speak where he has attended ceremonies his entire life—and where his parents, George and Betty, now rest in Byron Cemetery.

He served for four years as an intelligence officer in the active US Army ending his service as a captain. After 9/11, he went back into the US Army for six years as a civilian special agent for counterintelligence achieving the grade of GS-14. His words carried the weight of service, experience, and remembrance.

After thanking the 𝗕𝘆𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱 for attending, George reflected on his own connection: he played trumpet for the band throughout high school and he played Taps at veterans’ funerals here. He shared:
“𝘈𝘴 𝘢 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘯, 𝘐 𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘳—𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘐 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘵. 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘴, 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘪𝘳, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘨 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦... 𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶.”

He reminded us that 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆. “𝘞𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦. 𝘞𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘴. 𝘞𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴. 𝘞𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦. 𝘞𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴.”

George spoke of the 𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲: some veterans “𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮—𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘦. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦.”

𝗘𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝘆𝗿𝗼𝗻, 𝘄𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁—and to choose remembrance:
“𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺. 𝘌𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘵... 𝘐𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘴𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦. 𝘈 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘢𝘺: 𝘞𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳. 𝘞𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘳. 𝘞𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵.”

And in closing, a 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 for us all:
“𝘞𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘢 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘏𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵. 𝘏𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘪𝘵. 𝘏𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘴𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘴.”

🚧 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🚒

Renovation and expansion at the Byron Fire Hall (707 Frontage Road) are officially underway! 👷‍♂️

Led by Brennan Construction of Mankato, the project kicked off earlier this spring and will bring some important upgrades to support our local fire department, including:
✅ Two new apparatus bays (located west of the current building)
✅ A dedicated decontamination area to enhance safety

The project is on track to be completed later this year—helping ensure our fire services continue to meet the growing needs of the community.

👏 Thank you to everyone involved in making this investment in Byron’s safety and future!
