Last night, one of our fire apparatus was struck again while operating on M-6, this time involving Squad 41.
Unlike the previous incident, we did not have a blocking vehicle positioned behind us, as that apparatus is still out of service from being hit about a month ago. Because of that, our firefighters were working without that added layer of protection, and at the time of the crash, two of our firefighters were just 20 to 30 feet away and walking back toward the truck.
That reality sinks in when you take a moment to think about how close this could have been to something far worse.
We are incredibly grateful that no one was injured, including the driver, who required assistance getting out of the vehicle but thankfully was not hurt. Our crews immediately did what they are trained to do, stepping in to help without hesitation and without judgment, because that is what this job calls us to.
On the back of Squad 41, it reads, “In God We Trust.” In moments like this, that phrase carries a little more weight, reminding us how quickly things can change and how much is truly out of our control. We are thankful for the protection shown last night in a situation that could have gone another way.
At the same time, this continues to happen on our roadways. A Michigan State Police cruiser was also struck in Byron Township just last week, which reinforces that these are not isolated incidents but a growing concern that affects the safety of everyone on scene.
We do not say this out of anger, but with sincerity, because this matters to every one of us who responds to these calls and to the families who wait for us to come home. We forgive, but we are also asking our community to take this seriously and to think about the decisions being made behind the wheel.
Please do not drive impaired or distracted, and please slow down when approaching emergency scenes, because a single choice in a moment can change the course of someone else’s life forever. Every firefighter on our department has either a family, a spouse, children, or other loved ones who expect them to come home at the end of their shift.
Help us make sure they do.
