On Friday, Captain Schaffer and Sergeant Umfress were honored to be guests at the Missouri House of Representatives. They were there as guests of Representative Cecelie Williams from our district.
Both officers were able to see the passing of Bentley and Masonβs Law. This law establishes a requirement for individuals convicted of DWI, who cause the death of a parent, to pay child maintenance payments for surviving children until the children turn 18.
This is currently a law in Tennessee, Kentucky, Maine, Texas, Utah, Montana, Guam, Cayman Islands, and the US Virgin Islands. Itβs being considered in many other states, Canada, Australia, and the UK.
The crash which fueled this law occurred here in Byrnes Mill in 2021 and both Captain Schaffer and Sergeant Umfress were among the first responders who worked the crash that tragic night.
We are honored to have had the opportunity to stand alongside MADD Heartland, Representative Williams, and the family to see the passing of this bill.
