The mission of the Bourne Emergency Management Office is to develop and maintain a comprehensive plan to prepare for, respond to, and recover from, all types of major emergencies that might occur in Bourne. In order to accomplish this mission, Emergency Management works closely with the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) to identify potential events, both natural and man made, that might pu
t resident’s lives and property at risk. Once identified, plans are developed to reduce opportunity for the event to occur, how to prepare for when the event does occur, how to respond to the event, and finally how to recover from the event after it does occur. The Bourne Emergency Management Office is responsible for the co-ordination between town departments, regional resources, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts agencies. The Bourne Emergency Management office is staffed by one part time Director. The Director, appointed by the Town Administrator, is responsible for the development and co-ordination of plans between town departments, businesses, and institutions within Bourne. Much of the planning is accomplished through the efforts of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC). The LEPC is comprised of town government, local business, educational, religious, transportation, and media representatives who interact to address all potential needs of the community during a major emergency. Bourne Emergency Management is not a response organization like the fire or police department. We do not have dozens of personnel standing by ready to be deployed where needed. We are a coordinating agency charged with making sure the residents of Bourne are as prepared as possible for major disasters or events.
