Change of Command is an important event for Mass Maritime with the senior staff stepping down from their roles to allow the junior class of cadets to step up and lead the academy. MMA EMS played a vital role at change of command last Wednesday. MMA EMS stood ready to assist the regiment with any and all medical emergencies before, during, and after the change of command ceremony. MMA EMS set up multiple aid stations as well as a staging area. A1 stood ready to transport patients to the hospital.

DOUBLE EMS SPOTLIGHT 🚑🚑: John Cetrino and Curtis Riley

I’m John Cetrino, I’m a freshman Emergency Management major. I am from Boston and graduated from Boston College High School last year. I grew up going to the firehouse with my dad and made my decision early on that I would go into the emergency field of work. I worked as a lifeguard for DCR in Hyde Park before becoming an EMT. I am a member of the Onset Fire Department and will be attending the Massachusetts Fire Academy in June. I chose to come to Mass Maritime because of all the opportunities the school offers. An opportunity the school offers early on is experiential learning where I went to North Carolina with other EM students over winter break and worked to help the rural communities after hurricane Helene devastated the area. MMA EMS is another great opportunity the school offers to cadets as soon as they become nationally and state certified. MMA EMS has helped me make friends, learn, and grow as a person new to the profession. With great mentors such as Mr. Ogden and Mr. Burke I quickly became an involved member of MMA EMS  and I look forward to my continued growth in the field.

Hi I’m Curtis Riley, I’m from Mansfield, MA and I’m a 4/C cadet here at the academy. I’ve been an EMT for a little over a year now and MMA EMS has given me an amazing hands on experience. I plan on getting my paramedic license at the academy along with a degree in EM and plan on being a medic/firefighter post graduation. I am also a part of the Onset Fire program here and attend the fire academy this summer.

MMA EMS MOULAGE DRILL 🚢⚓️

On May 3rd MMA EMS conducted a MOULAGE Drill aboard the Patriot State. This drill was in partnership with the U.S Navy.

MMA EMS members Ava Boyle and Bodie Poirier designed the drill. It simulated an explosion in the railroad deck of the ship.

U.S Navy Participants were responsible for triaging, treating, and then transferring the apt onto a scoop board, a backboard, or stair chair. MMA EMS members stood by to assist the participants.

After the MOULAGE session, participants and MMA EMS members went to the ships hospital to simulate Pt’s being brought into the hospital and assessed. Dr. Cukor, and Bob McQuaid PA assisted with this.

Overall the drill was a success. MMA EMS members were very fortunate we could assist in the training of the U.S Navy Participants. A huge thank you to the Patriot State staff for letting members run the drill on the ship. Another thank you to EM Ops Logan Smith, for taking photos and EM Cadets for playing the role of victims.

MMA EMS volunteered at the Boston Marathon this past Monday. We had an amazing opportunity to work on a professional van, picking up and providing care to elite runners during the race. Got great experience working alongside RN’s, PA’s, and MD’s in a fast-paced environment.

John Cetrino and Cole Handel were on express bus 54, helping transport runners from Heartbreak Hill (mile 20) to the family reunification and medical area at the finish line.

Awesome experience all around being part of such a huge event! 🏃💨 🚑

Great experience touring the ship last Thursday with Lt. Andrew Smith (Reading Fire) and MMA alumni and former MMA EMS member Justin Chaires. We got to check out the ro-ro deck, quarterdeck, and the ship’s hospital, and learned about the equipment used onboard. Awesome to see how everything comes together! 🚑💙

EMT SPOTLIGHT 🚑: Ava Boyle

I’m Ava, I’m a freshman and I’ve been in EMS/fire for about 4 years now. I just recently transferred here from Sacred Heart University. I am an EM major going into paramedic school next semester! I work for Brewster Ambulance part time and Carver EMS. I started out with an internship at Duxbury Fire Department a few years ago. I just joined Army ROTC here and plan on going into the National Guard. After I graduate I want to be a medic/firefighter and do an accelerated nursing school and become a flight medic. I joined MMA EMS to help out my maritime community and gain EMT experience. I enjoy running and working out in my free time and look forward to my next 3 years here.

MMA EMS Assumption University Drill

On November 9, MMA EMS members (Chief Burke, EMT Handel, and EMT Difalco Wheeler) attended a moulage drill at Assumption University for Physician Assistant students. Invited by Eric Otterson, MMA EMS assisted with setup and participated alongside MMA A1.

The day began with a class led by 18 Delta Special Forces and Army Medics on MCI triage and “closed loop communication.” Members also learned the RPM method (Respiration, Perfusion, Mental status) for rapid triage.

Following the class, Eric Otterson trained MMA EMS on using an advanced medical manikin capable of breathing, bleeding, talking, and showing pulses. Members helped run a “Stop the Bleed” station, controlling the manikin while Army Medics instructed PA students.

Later, UMass Memorial Life Flight landed on the baseball field to demonstrate helicopter operations and equipment. MMA EMS helped simulate a critical patient transport and toured the medflight with the students.

The main drill simulated a large-scale MCI in the clinic, requiring PA students to manage multiple patients under pressure. MMA EMS helped out by operating the manikins and transporting “patients” to and from MMA A1.

Overall, the event was a success. MMA EMS thanks Mr. Otterson, Assumption University faculty, 18 Delta Special Forces, and Army Medics for the opportunity and valuable training experience.

October Recap!!

Maritime EMS has had a busy month!

For starters, EMT’s assisted health services in their annual Flu Shot Clinic, administering over 300 shots in 2 days! Thank You Health Services for allowing us to help out!

We held our annual BLS Review this month for all members of the program. EMT’s spent their night going through our truck’s and practicing our skills across all boards of service.

EMS has been activated 11 times for 911 Response in the month of October. Additionally, we have worked countless services details for various sporting events!

Tonight MMA EMS A1 and S1 volunteered at the Bourne Recreation Department’s annual Trunk or Treat Event. EMT’s decorated the back of A1 and handed out over 10 gallons of candy!

Finally, October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pictured above is MMA EMS Chief Will Burke supporting the fight and wearing his pink MMA EMS shirt to spread awareness.

Thank you for a great month!

We look forward to continuing to serve the MMA community!

Happy Halloween!🎃 👻
