Throughout August, our department worked on sharpening their vehicle extrication skills through a series of hands-on training sessions. Crews practiced vehicle stabilization, lifting, and cribbing operations, preparing for challenging incidents where a victim may be pinned beneath a vehicle.
Last week's training brought it all together as members put their skills to the test during full-speed extrication scenarios, emphasizing teamwork, communication, and problem-solving under realistic conditions.
A huge THANK YOU to HRS Towing for providing the vehicles that made this hands-on training possible. Access to real vehicles allows our crews to train with the tools, techniques, and challenges they may encounter on an actual emergency scene.

With students heading back to school this week, school buses will once again be traveling our roads each morning and afternoon.

Please slow down, stay alert, and watch for children waiting at bus stops, crossing streets, and getting on and off buses. Remember to stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended.

During this week's training, crews reviewed and practiced the proper procedures for safely lifting a vehicle and extricating a patient trapped beneath it, with an emphasis on scene safety, stabilization, and teamwork.

First Responders Camp 2026 has come to an end. What an incredible week it has been! Our campers had the opportunity to learn from some amazing first responders and public safety professionals. Throughout this week they explored fire safety with firefighters, learned how EMS professionals respond to emergencies, met two incredible K9 teams, discovered what important work Maine Marine Patrol does, saw how the Maine Warden Service protects Maine's natural resources, got an up close look of a SWAT team and the equipment they use, learned all about evidence collection and processing a crime scene, learned about bully prevention and how to protect ourselves, and ended the week learning about bike safety and how to safely ride our bikes on the roadway.

As our camp comes to an end, I want each of you to know how incredibly proud both BFD Captain Morrison and BPD Officer Dahms are of the courage, kindness, and teamwork you each showed this week. Every challenge you took on, every new friend you made, and every time you helped someone else made this camp a success.

Being in Public Safety isn't just about wearing a badge, it's about serving others, making good choices, showing respect, and doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

Thank you for letting us spend the week with you. We hope you had as much fun as we did, and we hope you'll carry the lessons and friendships you made here long after camp is over.
