State Proposes Archery Zone for Portion of a Piedmont Game Land
Wildlife Agency Requests Public Comments for Proposed Regulation Change

RALEIGH, N.C. — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) invites the public to provide comments on a proposal that would change a 711-acre tract in the northern portion of the Butner-Falls of Neuse Game Land from general game land to archery zone.

A public input meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at the Butner Town Hall Camp Butner Room, located at 415 Central Avenue, Butner. NCWRC staff will accept public comments and answer questions during the meeting. No registration required.

The 711-acre tract is owned by the N.C. Department of Agriculture. The change in designation to archery zone reflects an increase in farm operations and expansion of the Department’s adjacent Umstead Beef Unit Research Station. The archery zone designation limits hunting to archery equipment and falconry only.

Lake Holt Boat Ramp Update

Unfortunately, current water levels at the boat ramp are very low. At this time, boats larger than 14 feet are difficult to launch and are not recommended.

Small jon boats and kayaks can still be launched successfully, however, please use caution as water levels remain low.
