‘Severe’ Staffing Shortages at VA Continuing to Increase, Says IG

Staffing shortages qualifying as “severe” in VA health care-related occupations have continued to increase, following a major jump in 2025, says an inspector general report.

For the current fiscal year, officials at the Veterans Health Administration facilities—which accounts for the large majority of the department—“reported a total of 4,712 severe occupational staffing shortages,” a report said, up from the 4,434 of 2025. That number in turn had been up from the 2,959 total of fiscal 2024.

A “severe” shortage is defined as applying to occupations that are difficult to staff based on criteria that may warrant the use of special hiring authorities and recruitment and retention incentives; it does not necessarily reflect vacancy rates in those positions.
