This is Fire Prevention Week, and NFPA's 2026 theme is "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower," focused on lithium-ion batteries.

In a commercial building, those batteries are in the laptops on every desk, the cordless tools in the maintenance shop, and the e-bikes and scooters people bring inside. NFPA's guidance applies at work as much as at home:

- Use the charger the manufacturer approved for the device
- Charge on a hard, flat surface
- Unplug once a device is fully charged
- Stop using any battery that swells, overheats, smokes, or smells unusual
- Charge e-bikes and scooters outdoors when possible, away from exits

A charging area that has grown over time, or a closet full of tool batteries, is worth a walk-through this week.

A public university in Nebraska needed the fire alarm system in one of its residence halls replaced between the end of spring semester and July 31. The building kept hosting summer camps the entire time, and it couldn't be left without fire protection at any point.

We engineered the replacement and supplied a new NOTIFIER addressable system with voice evacuation, working closely with the electrical contractor handling installation. A new panel also meant meeting current code, which added low-frequency sounders in every sleeping room and extra power supplies to carry the load.

The building stayed protected through every stage, and the project finished by the deadline.

A voice evacuation system that people can hear isn't necessarily one they can understand. NFPA 72 requires speech intelligibility, not just volume, for life safety announcements, and a system that's audible but garbled can leave people confused about which way to go during an actual emergency.

Midwest Alarm Services designs and tests sound systems for intelligibility across every zone of a facility, not just decibel level, so instructions are actually understood when they matter most.

We're putting the finishing touches on the Q3 edition of the Midwest Monitor. This one includes a firsthand account of how a fire alarm system MWAS installed and maintains helped evacuate 122 people before a building failure early one August morning, no injuries reported.

It hits inboxes in less than a week. Make sure you're on the list: https://hubs.la/Q04ylB6K0

Not every space needs the same fire detection technology. An aspirating smoke detector in a steamy commercial kitchen will trigger nuisance alarms, and a photoelectric smoke detector in a dusty warehouse will do the same, while a detector poorly matched to a clean office environment might respond too slowly to an actual fire.

Midwest Alarm Services engineers tailor component selection, detector type included, to the specific risk level and operational needs of each space, rather than defaulting to one solution across an entire facility.

Installing a mass notification system isn't the same as knowing it works. Speakers fail, devices lose network connectivity, and text alerts can get delayed by carrier issues, problems you only find by testing regularly, not by assuming the system is ready.

Midwest Alarm Services designs mass notification systems with built-in testing and monitoring, so gaps in coverage surface during a scheduled check, not during an actual emergency.

Fire alarm requirements shift significantly depending on what's inside a building. In Episode 7 of Code Corner, Engineering Manager Nicole Hickman and Industry Affairs Manager Dan Decker finish their walkthrough of IBC Section 907.2, covering occupancy Groups M through S: mercantile spaces, hotels and motels, apartment buildings, one- and two-family dwellings, residential care and assisted living facilities, and storage occupancies, including the 2024 lithium-ion and lithium metal battery detection requirements now spanning Groups B, F, M, and S.

Twenty-five years ago today, first responders ran toward the danger everyone else was running from. Their courage that day, and every day since, is the reason our work matters.

On this Patriot Day, Midwest Alarm Services remembers the lives lost on September 11th and honors the first responders who continue to answer the call.

Commercial kitchen fires often start in places a walk-through won't catch: grease buildup inside ductwork, a nozzle that's shifted out of position, an extinguishing agent past its service life.

Midwest Alarm Services installs and services kitchen fire suppression systems built for the specific hood and cooking equipment they're protecting, and keeps them on the inspection schedule NFPA 96 requires.
