A couple of events coming up for the Hurst-Bush community! The Whistle Stop will be hosting a vendor event tomorrow, September 5th from 9 am-5 pm in Hurst. Info is posted on their flyer attached.

Then the following week, Saturday September 12th the Bush Fire Dept will host a vendor event in Bush Park. Information is listed on the attached flyer. Please contact a member of the department for more information.

In times of tragedy, it is often difficult to find words to express your thoughts. For now, we'll leave it at this-
Thank you to our amazing Du Quoin Fire Department and all the surrounding departments that came together to fight this horrible fire.
Thank you to all the businesses that opened their doors as a cool refuge for weary first responders. Thank you to the individuals, churches, and businesses that donated water, ice, food and supplies.
As the evening progresses, please continue to keep the owners and employees of the businesses affected by this tragic fire in your thoughts and prayers, as well as the fire fighters and first responders who will remain on scene throughout the night.
The face and future of Du Quoin Main Street changed forever today.

Letters are being sent out to property owners who are in violation of our city ordinances. These letters are for any of the following: junk/debri, overgrown weeds/grass, & inoperable vehicles. All properties turned in have been based on complaints we’ve received from residents. If you have any of the above issues on your property, then you will receive one. Streets with the most complaints have been: 6th, 7th, Bailey, & Poplar Ave. If you live in these areas and have an unkept yard, then you are probably on the list. If you have already contacted us or are making improvements already, please continue. We appreciate it.

Bi-County health department visited our area back in June, and most likely contacted you already by sending you a letter/notice. We will continue working with Bi-County regarding the situation.

You will have 30 days to make the necessary improvements to your property before further actions are taken, including placing a lien against your property. We have put plans in place for a code enforcement officer to make visits to help enforce the ordinances. October 1st properties will be revisited for evaluation.

Our Fall clean up day is scheduled for October 5th. This would be a great time to take advantage of this free service provided by our village before further actions are taken against you. We ask the ones who have contacted us with complaints to be patient. We do not have the resources larger towns have regarding these issues so this takes time, some situations are more difficult than others regarding ownership of property when dealing with owners who don’t live here. We also have to do things the legal way, and follow rules. We hope that your neighbors will have enough respect for you and the town to do the right thing and make the improvements they need to make to make things better for everyone.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of long time Village resident Sue Scott. Sue was a devoted wife to former mayor, Theron Scott for 68 years, a cherished mother to her daughters Marsha & Teresa, son Randy, and a loved grandmother to her 5 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She loved her family with all her heart.

Sue had a very giving spirit, she cared deeply for those around her. She was especially known in this community for her cooking and baking. She would bake cakes for the town bingos (she loved bingo), overloaded your candy bucket if you trick-or-treated her house at Halloween, and would often feed her neighbors and friends with something she made at her home on Pine Avenue. She put a lot of love into everything she did, and you felt that love.

Sue will be greatly missed by everyone in our community, she meant a lot to those who were blessed enough to have known her.

Sue passed away with family by her side, including her two daughters Marsha & Teresa who have been pillars of strength and have taken the very best care of both parents over the years. Our love, thoughts, & prayers go out to the Scott family.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 24th starting at 5 pm at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 25th at 11 am.

It’s that time of year again! If you have a child preschool through high school age that is needing a backpack of school supplies, please sign up for this free event. Sign up begins July 1st with a deadline of July 24th. Bags will be ready for pick up on July 30th at the Bush City Hall from 10 am to 4 pm.

This sign up is for any child residing in the Village of Bush, Lockeyville, or Blairsville area. If your child resides in Hurst, you will need to contact their office to see when sign up starts. Don’t miss out!

Our AC is being repaired this week at our community building after having problems this weekend with it not cooling. We have a rental commitment August 1st, next availability will be August 2nd. Please seek other venues for your event if you are needing anything during the week.

Please avoid Hickory Ave from Rt 149 into Bush. The road is blocked for a water main break (Hurst side) and crews are trying to repair the main. You can turn onto Cypress (T’s Tire Shop) or next street down on Walnut to enter or leave.

Several vendors set up already, including fresh garden veggies, snow cones, & local honey! 🐝 🍅 Fun started at 11 am and runs until 4 at the Bush park! Hot dogs, nachos, hamburgers, and drinks available at the pavilion!
