Good evening. We wanted to take a minute to give an update. Utility crews are working diligently around the clock to restore power and services, clear trees and roadways. Please remember that down power lines should always be treated as if they are energized - stay away and report them. Give utility crews room to work - if you can avoid the areas they are working in then please do so, if not then slow down and give them plenty of room.
On that same note we wanted to answer a question that has been asked a lot in the past 2 days. Early Friday morning at approximately 1:15 am a Burr Oak Firefighter was struck and injured on US12 while rendering aid at a vehicle vs tree traffic accident. Thankfully injuries sustained were not critical in nature. The Firefighter was transported by Lifecare Ambulance to Coldwater Hospital for evaluation. He is home now and recovering. More details can be released at a later date. We completely understand everyone’s need to get to their destination, especially when bad weather may have caused other issues. Please remember the few minutes saved are not worth what could happen.
As always in our county and surrounding area when help is needed there’s no hesitation - many departments and services had already began to funnel in to help with storm damage and we, along with Sturgis Dept of Public safety and Tri Township Fire Dept were fielding a large volume of emergency calls at the time. We are used to dealing with tragedy and panic, but When that panicked mayday radio traffic came across the radio all of our hearts sank, one of our own - no one - from dispatch to officers in the area, emergency management down to every firefighter and EMT in the area hesitated a moment to battle weather and obstacles to head that way from every direction. We would like to sincerely thank Colon Community Fire & Rescue St Joseph County Central Dispatch St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office LifeCare Ambulance Bronson Fire Department Michigan State Police Mendon Fire Department for their help on not only this but for a long couple of days….it is a humbling experience and we could not have done it without you. Some firefighters put in upwards of 30 straight hours. And another huge thank you to St. Joseph County United Way for so quickly jumping in to help and organize food, water and any supplies needed for the Burr Oak and Sturgis areas! Stay safe everyone!

Good morning Burr Oak Township and Village. As you are most certainly already aware the storms last night have left a lot of down power lines and trees, damage and impassable roadways. If you don’t need to be out please stay home. As always stay away from down power lines. Be mindful of down trees as well as they can hide power lines. If you encounter a hazard please notify central dispatch via the non emergency number. 911 should be reserved for true emergencies.
There is a chance power restoration could take an extended time due to the extent of damage. If you need assistance, bottled water or food please reach out to us. Thank you and stay safe!

Good afternoon all. The risk of severe weather into this evening and overnight hours remains high. Now is the time to take measures such as - Securing outdoor items that may blow away or become projectiles.
- Make sure you have an emergency plan in the event of severe weather such as a tornado and communicate this or even practice it with your family
- Prepare for likely power outages, Electric service providers take as many steps as they can to mitigate outages but Mother Nature can throw a wrench into those.
- Have multiple ways of receiving weather information such as Weather Radios, Charged mobile devices, Michigan Storm Chasers and the National Weather Service
- In the event of severe weather the siren will sound but be aware this is done for severe weather anywhere in the county, the sirens are activated all at once for the entire county. Sirens are one method of warning those outside away from other devices but please do not rely solely on the siren for alerts!
- If a down or arcing power line or electrical equipment is encountered please stay far away and notify St Joseph County Central Dispatch, keeping in mind that when severe weather happens it can get very busy quickly from an Emergency Services Standpoint.
- In the event of power outages if you choose to use a generator please be aware of the exhaust and CO levels that can accumulate. Generators should NEVER be ran indoors and it’s always recommended to have operable CO detectors (Generator or Not)
- If severe weather does hit our area it will likely cause travel issues - please refrain from unnecessary travel if you can, this allows for emergency services, road commission, utility companies, etc to access areas of need and ensure the areas are safe and cleaned up quicker
- If you encounter areas that are barricaded or “taped off” please avoid them. At times it’s necessary to barricade areas so other emergency’s can be handled. We apologize in advance if an area of your yard is blocked off, just know it’s for everyone’s safety.
