If you received a letter titled “Assistance Requested to Update Your Voter Registration Information,” please know this is a legitimate letter sent by the North Carolina State Board of Elections and it relates to your voter record in Yancey County.

Why you got it:
When someone registers to vote, federal law (Help America Vote Act) and North Carolina law require the voter registration application to include one of the following:
• a NC driver’s license number, or
• if they do not have one, the last 4 digits of their Social Security number, or
• if they have neither, an indication that they do not have these numbers.
(See N.C. Gen. Stat. § 163-82.4.)

If the information on a registration does not match what is on file with the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles or Social Security Administration, a letter may be sent requesting your help to resolve the discrepancy. This can happen due to a typo, formatting differences, or a name/date-of-birth mismatch.

What to do:
✅ Please follow the instructions in the letter to help update/verify your information.

Security reminder:
🔒 Do not post or message personal information (DL number, SSN, DOB) on social media. Election offices will not ask for sensitive information through Facebook messages.

Questions? Call the Yancey County Board of Elections at 828-682-3950.
