Recently, we visited the family farm of MCGA board member/Renville County Corn and Soybean Growers Association President Nathan Serbus in Renville for a photoshoot. We worked AgriLife Studios to capture photos of Nathan, his brother (Jaden), and his dad (Norb) as they sprayed, planted a field of sweet corn, and hauled grain to Farmward Cooperative in Danube.

Nathan, 26, said he knew from an early age that he wanted to farm. “I can’t imagine life any different,” he said. As a senior in high school, he began renting ground from his dad and purchased his first piece of land. In 2020, Nathan completed a two-year program in farm operations and management at Ridgewater College in Willmar, and he has farmed full-time with his dad and brother ever since.

Nathan, Jaden, and Norb mostly grow field corn, though Nathan and Jaden also raise sweet corn that they sell at a local corn stand. Jaden also raises popcorn, which he sells to local high schools. The three technically have their own farms, but they share equipment and work together.

Nathan said a challenge for him as a young farmer is finding enough land to operate. He said he’s been fortunate to pick up additional acres over the past year but that the lack of available land makes it difficult for young farmers like him. To secure additional acres, he’ll network with local farmers and landowners, but it's a process that takes time.

Nathan said he hopes to still be farming 10 years from now and that he can find additional ground to run. He said he’d want the nonfarming public to know that farmers are doing right by the land they operate and implement conservation practices where applicable.

MCGA thanks Nathan for his leadership on behalf of farmers across the state!

One month ago, Minnesota's U.S. House delegation sent a clear signal on year-round E15. All eight members of the delegation voted in favor of H.R. 1346, bipartisan legislation that would permanently authorize year-round sales of the biofuel blend.

MCGA thanks House Majority Whip Emmer and Representatives Finstad, Craig, Morrison, McCollum, Omar, Fischbach, and Stauber for their leadership on this issue! We look forward to working with members of the U.S. Senate to make year-round E15 a reality.
