Honoring Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom, Reflection, and Community

Today we recognize Juneteenth, also known as Liberation Day, Black Independence Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, and by many regional names. This meaningful holiday commemorates the end of the enslavement of African Americans in the United States.

Although slavery was legally abolished two years earlier in Confederate states through the Emancipation Proclamation, its enforcement did not reach all places immediately. It was nearly two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free on June 19, 1865.

Juneteenth is a time to honor and celebrate a powerful legacy of history, resilience, joy, family, community, and freedom for African Americans across the country. It is also an opportunity, especially in this moment in American and Minnesotan history, to reflect more deeply on what freedom means in our own lives and communities, and what it requires for all people to live free, safe, stable, and dignified lives.

Across Minnesota, we have witnessed moments that challenge and expand our understanding of freedom, including times when the rights, freedom, and well-being of our neighbors have been threatened β€” most recently with Operation Metro Surge. In response, Minnesotans have shown care, courage, and solidarity. As we move forward, it remains important not only to respond when freedoms are at risk, but also to do our own individual and communal ongoing work of learning, unlearning, and examining the beliefs and systems that impact equity and justice.

We invite you to reflect:

What does freedom look like for you, your neighbors, and your community? And how does that vision shift when we center those most marginalized and impacted by systems of oppression?

This Juneteenth, may we honor the emancipation of enslaved African Americans while also reflecting on our shared responsibility in advancing freedom, racial equity, anti-racism, and justice.

In observance of Juneteenth, 360 Communities’ Resource Centers and food shelves are closed today.

We also encourage you to celebrate and reflect by participating in community events across the Twin Cities and surrounding areas:

Happy Pride from 360 Communities! 🌈 We recently held our 5th Annual PRIDE 360 event for staff and volunteers to celebrate Pride Month. ❀

This year’s educational portion centered on the transgender community, with a focus on the impact of the SAVE Act and Kansas SB 244, policies that have drawn significant attention for their potential effects on voting access and transgender rights, and how these policies affect trans individuals and communities. Together, we also explored opportunities for advocacy, as well as individual and collective next steps.

We enjoyed treats, Pride Trivia, and a variety of Pride-themed art activities, including Bloom with Pride pottery painting, glitter jars, and cookie decorating.

360 Communities is committed to ongoing growth and tangible action to center diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within our organization and community. Learn more: https://360communities.org/about/deib/

Udder Tech is celebrating June Dairy Month by giving back. For every web order placed during the month of June, Udder Tech will donate either a gallon of milk or a pound of butter to a local food shelf! ❀️

360 Communities is thrilled to be a recipient again this year β€” for the 4th time! Each week, we'll pick up the dairy donations at Aldi (one of our food rescue sites) and bring them back to the Rosemount Food Shelf.

Last week, we received our first delivery of 990 pounds! It included 16 gallons of skim milk, 42 gallons of 2% milk, 42 gallons of whole milk, 30 sticks of butter, and 35 boxes of cereal. WOW! 🀩

Thank you Udder Tech Inc. for supporting our neighbors in Dakota County with fresh milk, butter, and cereal this summer! β˜€οΈ We appreciate your partnership!

A few extra cans in your cart can make a real difference for a local family.

From June 1–30, bring shelf-stable food donations to any Apple Ford location and help support local families in need through our partnership with Feeding America. Together, we can load up for the common good!
