Chief Chris Dorsey was one of a kind. He was always the same. He never changed who he was for anyone. He was a spectacular friend.

It was an honor and a privilege for the Yancey County Rescue Squad to help cover Woodfin Fire Depts District during the funeral and procession today. It was a privilege to help

🚨 Road Conditions Update 🚨

Roads across our area are becoming icy and dangerous. We strongly encourage everyone to stay home if you can and avoid unnecessary travel.

Every vehicle on the road right now increases the risk not just to drivers, but to emergency responders who may have to navigate these conditions to help others.

If you don’t absolutely need to be out, please stay home. Giving the roads time to improve helps keep you, your family, and our responders safe.

When you see the winter forecast, don't just look at the snowfall, look at the ice. A tiny shift in temperature or moisture can change everything.

0.10" ice = slick roadways and sidewalks to get.
0.25" ice = turns roads into ice rinks and tree limbs begin to sag.
0.50" ice = causes significant power outages and very dangerous travel conditions.

A fraction of an inch makes a world of difference. Stay weather-aware and stay safe! Visit ReadyNC.gov/winter-weather for more tips.

⚠️ CARBON MONOXIDE SAFETY ALERT ⚠️
With an ice storm expected this weekend, we want to remind everyone about the very real danger of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning during winter power outages.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly—and every winter we respond to preventable emergencies related to it.

Please remember:
• ❌ Never run generators, grills, or propane heaters inside your home, garage, or near windows/doors
• 🚗 Never run a vehicle inside a garage—even with the door open
• 🔥 Keep fuel-burning appliances clear of ice, snow, and debris
• 🏠 Make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home (and check the batteries now)
• 💤 If a CO alarm sounds or you feel symptoms like headache, dizziness, nausea, or confusion—get outside immediately and call 911

Ice storms bring power outages, and power outages increase CO risk. A few precautions now can save lives later.

❄️Severe Weather Alert from Yancey EMS❄️

With a significant winter storm expected this weekend, we want to remind everyone to stay safe and be prepared. Large amounts of snow can create hazardous conditions—here’s what you should keep in mind:

‼️Medical & Emergency Tips:

🟥 Keep necessary medications on hand and ensure you have enough for several days.

🟥 Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly or those with chronic conditions.

🟥 Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Roads may become impassable quickly.

🟥 Have an emergency kit ready: water, non-perishable food, flashlights, blankets, and a fully charged phone.

🟥 If you use medical devices requiring electricity, such as oxygen concentrators-have a backup power source available and enough fuel to last several days. Call your oxygen supplier and ask for extra oxygen tanks to be delivered to ensure you wont run out.

Stay informed via local news and weather alerts.

‼️ Call 911 only for true emergencies. EMS response times may be longer than normal due to hazardous road conditions already taxed by Hurricane Helene.

Your safety is our priority. Let’s all take precautions and look out for one another this weekend!

It's has been a journey, but the Yancey County Rescue Squad has our new QRV on the road. The vehicle was purchased after our long relied upon 1998 Suburban was retired. The truck was largely purchased using donations from the Yancey County Citizens we are proud to serve. The truck was purchased before the devastation of Hurrican Helen, which greatly slowed the process of outfitting the vehicle. Hopefully this truck will serve the community as long as it's predecessor did.
