Last year, we had 1 middle schooler wear mismatch shoes for Jim Thorpe Day — our leader Noah!

Noah leads races.
Noah leads in Ojibwemowin.
Noah leads his grades.
Noah leads his Bright Path.

He is a modern day warrior.

From one to 100, we hope to join him in wearing mismatched shoes for Jim Thorpe Day on April 16th!

We are still 8 months out, but we are never too early to learn about our ancestors.

🧡September 30th🧡 is designated as Orange Shirt Day in solidarity with the Every Child Matters movement. Help us to honor our Indigenous communities impacted by the residential and boarding school systems.

Wear an Orange Shirt to support and remember our Indigenous relatives.

✨Seed Keeper Season✨

A huge thank you to Ms. Tucci, for always sharing ideas, lesson plans, and questions that continues to refine our work each year!

Though not Native, Ms. Tucci has been such a good relative to our community! She actively demonstrates how powerful Indigenous Education for All can be for ALL students.

We would love to see more culturally proficient classrooms like hers!

She is an excellent teacher and 191 is so grateful to have an expert like her in our district!

The AIEP is especially grateful for the extra mile she goes to ensure our Indigenous students, and families, belong.

Thank you, Ms. Tucci for all you bring to our community!! 🫶🏽

✨Curriculum Sneak Peak 👀✨

Today, we spent some time lesson planning for our first iSWAG meeting of the year at BHS.

The American Indian Education Program provides weekly advisory group meetings for our secondary students, called iSWAG — Indigenous Student Weekly Advisory Groups.

This year, we have built a special partnership with a local Indigenous organization to implement a curriculum with our students! More information soon to come! For now, we hope you enjoy this sneak peak!

We are excited to see our students again — we’ve got a fun science experiment waiting for them! 👀

✨National Read a Book Day✨

Since we all have an extra day off tomorrow, the AIEP, and all our community leaders, encourage everyone to pick up a book and read it!

Read it aloud.
Read it in silence.
Read it alone.
Read it with the littles.
Ask someone to read it to you,
Or find it on YouTube .

Even just 20 minutes a day can go a long way!

Today we went to visit our Shakopee Indian Ed relatives to iHEAL propose to them and also to see their new classroom space at Shakopee High School. Last year was our first collaboration with Shakopee to bring their students to our iHEAL event. This year we hope to continue our work together and support one another in journeys to serve our Native American students and families.

✨Storytelling is Education. ✨
The American Indian Education Program is so excited to finally share our theme and focus for the year!

Something we always tell our indigenous students is that:

We are storytellers. We are scientists. We are writers. We are artists. We are mathematicians. We are creators.

Culture and academics don’t have to be separate, in fact our culture may be our superpower! 🦸🏽

We have so much more to share about our upcoming events, but only time can tell. 🤭

Some exciting things we have planned with our Culture Trunks next year! Keep a look out for the amazing things our teachers will be doing in the classrooms to further Indigenous education for all students. We are forever grateful for the opportunity to share our culture with our students and community.

What do woven baskets, beaded jewelry, arrowheads, antlers and grains have in common? As part of District 191’s new culture trunks, they help bring Indigenous history, culture and traditions to life.
