I hope everyone is enjoying the little 'previews' of spring these days. We are still here, we will continue to leave this page and the information on it available as long as the hate-inspired light pollution continues to flood the night sky in Yancey County.

Hi! For anyone new to this page, please take a look at the documents posted that clearly show the involvement of local government and that the property in question was and is still recorded as an asset of the state of North Carolina.
The administrators of this page made attempts to find a compromise concerning the cross, but the other side had no interest in reducing the light pollution or working with the community to find solutions that everyone could be at peace with, in fact the responses were belligerent and filled with hate along with some threatening messages sent over other FB sites and in private messages. (All of which are kept on file by our group members who received them). The only constant suggestion was for those who dislike it to avoid looking at it. We have adopted the same philosophy for events and displays for other belief systems and for Pride celebrations and displays during the month of June.
Suggestions made for the cross were: Changing the lumen level and color of the light so it does not disrupt nocturnal wildlife such as owls and bats by throwing prison system level light across the county. Adding cowling to block the light from the side facing the international dark sky area to protect their international certification. Preferably, limiting the hours and number of nights it is illuminated along with the other suggestions.
The supporters of the light pollution were unwilling to compromise on any level, leaving the impression their intention is to bully and discriminate against their own community for not sharing their specific desires concerning this excessively bright Latin cross and to let everyone who does not share their specific belief system know they are not community minded people but members of a sect that support hate and division.
We tried, oh well. Hopefully North Carolina will come to realize how damaging light pollution is to the environment and pass laws to control it in the future. Until then, WE ARE STILL HERE.

More frff correspondence, and an answer from the county manager. Still seems kind of suspicious. County still can’t prove with solid evidence that the tower isn’t owned by the state.
