General Burnside Island State Park has a fascinating history. It was originally named Point Isabel when it was settled around 1800 and gained its new name from General Ambrose E. Burnside, a commander for the Union army during the Civil War. Although General Burnside's career had its ups and downs, the city, and eventually the park, were both named for him. Of c

ourse, the landscape of the Burnside area changed dramatically in the 1950’s when Wolf Creek Dam was built and Cumberland Lake was formed. Thanks to this development, an island was created right in the middle of the lake. The land became a state park in 1958 and a causeway was built to reach the island. Today you'll find an award-winning golf course, campground, and plenty of natural beauty on this unique island state park.
