With National Police Week upon us in the coming weeks, the Burnside Police Department would like to honor our hometown fallen officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Over the course of many months of preparation, Chief Mike Hill established the first recorded timeline of Burnside Police Chiefs since the City of Burnside's incorporation in the late 1800's. Four fallen officers were identified as having lost their lives while protecting our community during this search. Their devotion to the City of Burnside will not fade back into the pages of history.

Please join us on Saturday, May 17th, 2025, at 2:00PM, to commemorate the lives of these local heroes at the unveiling of the Burnside Fallen Officer Memorial in Cole Park (100 Cole Park Drive, Burnside, KY 42519). We will hear testimonies from local leaders and law enforcement representatives, recognize present family members, and host an outdoor reception following the ceremony.

This event has an open invitation for all, and we encourage the public to spread this announcement of the Memorial so that we may salute their years of service with the community they so deeply cared for. Please share this announcement with former and current police officers, especially those affiliated with Burnside or the Pulaski County area.

The Burnside Police Department is pleased to announce that on Saturday December 21st 2024, officers with the Burnside Police Department, officers with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, an officer from the Kentucky Park Rangers, an officer from the Pulaski County Detention Center, Mayor Robert Lawson, employees of the City of Burnside, Eddie and Krista Glover, and Burnside Elementary School Principle April Mounce had the privilege to es**rt numerous children from the Burnside community on a Christmas shopping trip at Somerset Wal-Mart.

The day started out with breakfast provided by Wal-Mart for all the children, families, and the officers.

The children were selected through the Family Resource Center at Burnside Elementary. The partnership with the Burnside Elementary School was invaluable in locating the children and determining what needs they had prior to shopping, such as winter coats or shoes. Each child got to spend a portion of funds on gifts and the other portion on clothing items.

Events like these are important to the Burnside Police Department. It is an opportunity to show the kids a side of the officers they may not get to see. It provides a personal and positive interaction between each child and officer during the event.

The Burnside Police Department wants to recognize all the sponsors that purchased ads on our 2025 calendar as the proceeds go to fund the event.

The Burnside Police Department wants to give a special thanks to Eddie and Daisy Glover, Michelle Morrow, Play Mart, Inc, Wal-Mart and Slate Branch Super Stop who went above and beyond to make this event possible.

BURNSIDE, KENTUCKY (September 11, 2023) — The Burnside Police Department (BPD) has received re-accreditation from the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police (KACP).

Those law enforcement agencies that meet the standards set by the Chiefs of Police Accreditation Program demonstrate they meet a high level of professional standards for efficient and effective operations. Agencies that achieve accreditation have examined all aspects of their operations. They have made conscious decisions about policies and procedures that fit the law enforcement requirements of their jurisdictions and have implemented those policies and trained their employees in their use.

The overall goal of the accreditation program is to promote professionalism and improve the delivery of law enforcement services. Accreditation gives Burnside Police Department the tools necessary to ensure that all policies and procedures conform to the most up-to-date professional law enforcement standards and best practices.

State accreditation through the KACP is not mandatory, but participation demonstrates Burnside Police Department’s commitment to professional excellence in serving the community.

Accreditation is a progressive and time-proven way of helping institutions evaluate and improve their overall performance. The cornerstone of this strategy lies in setting standards — 177 of them for KACP — containing a clear statement of professional objectives. KACP required each agency be re-evaluated for accreditation every four years.

After agencies conduct a thorough analysis to determine how existing operations can be adapted to meet these objectives, the department applies for accreditation. Once the procedures are in place, a team of independent professionals is assigned to verify that all applicable standards have been successfully implemented.

The independent assessment team during its inspection of the agencies goes beyond policy review and examines the application of those policies. After the initial review of an agency’s policies and documentation, the team conducts a site visit inspecting facilities, interviewing officers and civilian staff as well as inspecting police vehicles and equipment. The process culminates with a decision by an authoritative body that the institution is worthy of accreditation.

Accreditation reflects that Burnside Police Department is carefully measured against an established set of standards and meets or exceeds professionally accepted practices in law enforcement. The standards used in this program were developed by the KACP membership and are reviewed each year to determine if changes are necessary or additional standards should be in place.

Re-accreditation would not have been possible without the work of the entire staff at the Burnside Police Department. It would also not have been possible without the continued support of Mayor Robert Lawson and the Burnside City Council.

“I am very proud of our officers for this achievement,” Chief Hill said. “This is a direct reflection on their level of professionalism and devotion to our community.”

“I would like to thank Somerset Police Chief Hunt who presented this award to us tonight,” Hill stated. Chief Hunt was the President of the KACP at the time of our re-accreditation. “Chief Hunt and the Somerset Police Department have been a great Law Enforcement partner to the Burnside Police Department,” Hill stated.

For Immediate Release:
March 30, 2022

A joint investigation between the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources' Law Enforcement Special Investigation Unit and the Burnside Police Department resulted in the arrest of a Somerset, Kentucky man earlier this month.

Jake G. Crabtree, 25, was arrested on March 17 in reference to an indictment warrant passed down from the Pulaski County Grand Jury earlier in the month. The indictment warrant charges Crabtree with the theft of personal items over $1,000 and criminal mischief under $1,000. Crabtree was also being sought on two warrants for probation violations.

The charges stemmed from the joint investigation into reported cargo thefts, including catalytic converters, that had occurred throughout southeastern Kentucky at boating access areas.

Utilizing enhanced camera equipment and surveillance, officers monitored several locations in the Burnside, Kentucky area and were able to gain crucial information leading to the issuance of a search warrant for Crabtree’s residence. During the ex*****on of the search warrant Chief Mike Hill, Officer Matt Brown, and officers with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Special Investigations Unit discovered several items located at Crabtree’s residence belonging to the reporting victim. Crabtree was arrested and lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center with a no bond order for probation violations.

With lake season approaching, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife and the Burnside Police Department encourage everyone to remove valuable items from plain view and lock all compartments in their vehicles and to monitor vehicle gas levels for possible gas theft. If suspicious activity is observed, or you are a victim of a theft while in these recreational areas, please contact the local 9-1-1 center or the Kentucky State Police Post to make a report.

The indictment of a person by a grand jury is an accusation only and that person is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty or otherwise pleads guilty.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
