👀 THIS IS EYE-OPENING: We’re getting a much clearer picture of just how widely Texas’ Flock camera network is being searched, and some of these numbers are staggering.

The Texas Tribune analyzed roughly 615,000 searches of the Texas DPS Flock network during June alone. That works out to a search about once every four seconds.

And nearly HALF came from outside Texas.

According to the Tribune:

📸 At least 940 DPS Flock cameras had been installed as of this week.

🔎 3,075 law enforcement agencies searched the DPS network in June. Only 396 were in Texas. The other 2,679 were outside the state.

🌎 48% of all searches came from outside Texas.

🚔 More than 58,000 searches were listed as being for “traffic infractions,” including things like running stop signs or following too closely.

This comes after Gov. Greg Abbott ordered state agencies to stop spending money on Flock cameras. DPS says it will pause installing additional cameras, but will continue using the cameras it already has for what the agency describes as legitimate public safety efforts.

Flock cameras have proven to be a powerful tool for law enforcement. But when a Texas surveillance network is being searched hundreds of thousands of times a month, including extensively by agencies outside our state, I think it’s fair for taxpayers to ask questions about who has access, what they’re searching for and what safeguards are in place.

That conversation is clearly not over.
