The Sheriff is a constitutionally created office with duties to be prescribed by the legislature (Texas Constitution, Article V, Section 23). The Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer for the county and is responsible for operating the county jail, investigating crimes, making arrests, enforcing traffic regulations, serving writs, seizing property after judgment, and maintaining communicati

ons with other law enforcement organizations. The Sheriff has county-wide jurisdiction, but in practice, most Sheriffs' Offices concentrate their activities outside city limits where municipal officers cannot operate and assist municipal agencies when requested. Like all county department heads, the Sheriff appoints his own personnel and operates within the resources of his budget. The Sheriff is elected every four years and is responsible for security in both the county and district courts.

On June 3, 2026, the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) received confirmation of a detection of New World screwworm (NWS) in Zavala County, Texas. The best thing that livestock producers and animal owners can do to prevent infestation is to put eyes on their animals as often as possible, remain vigilant by implementing enhanced management practices to avoid creating wounds, and promptly report suspicious wounds.

FRAUDS AND SCAMS ONCE AGAIN!

THIS IS STILL HAPPENING

People in this county are receiving phone calls and text messages from SCAMMERS, threatening them with arrest if they do not pay a bond/fine/fee.

AND ONCE AGAIN, they are using the names of some of our staff to enhance their credibility.

BCSO WILL NOT CALL YOU AND DEMAND IMMEDIATE PAYMENTS
These scammers often use stock photos and downloadable PDFs of various official documents to make the victim think the call is legit.
AS WITH ALL SCAMS - the "tell" is in the manufactured sense of urgency and the unconventional payment method.

ALL CON ARTISTS like to manufacture urgency. Whether selling you the "deal of a lifetime" or placing you in fear of imminent arrest, the goal is the same: to keep you from thinking about the decision you are about to make.

ALL OF THESE SCAMS rely on unconventional payment methods. Whether it's a Bitcoin or cryptocurrency kiosk, gift cards, or money transfer cards, the goal is the same: to get you money away from you quickly using a transfer scheme that is difficult or impossible to trace.

PROTECT YOUSELF by verifying before you send any money. Do this by independently locating and contacting the agency that the scammer claims to be calling from. NEVER USE the phone number the scammer gave you; look it up for yourself!

Burnet County law enforcement and the Burnet County Courts will never demand immediate payment using these unconventional payment methods.

PLEASE TRY TO RAISE AWARENESS by talking to your friends and neighbors. Tell them it's a scam.
