**Update**

Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team Burlington has commenced the installation of seasonal buoys and anticipates completion by the published Light List date. Strong winds have displaced some buoys, which have been recovered. Additionally, a steel buoy from New York was moved off-station due to ice and has been recovered in Vermont; it will be returned to its original position soon.

The Coast Guard appreciates mariners reporting any aids to navigation discrepancies to Station Burlington or Sector Northern New England. Sharing information on local pages is also beneficial for prompt action. Reports received will prompt a Broadcast Notice to Mariners to ensure public awareness. When reporting, please provide location, type of aid, color, number, details of any missing boards, the source of the report, and a contact phone number. The Coast Guard prioritizes responses based on operational needs and weather forecasts.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and support!

Yesterday marked the birthday of BM1 Alex Bernier— a proud Vermont native and one of our own.

At U.S. Coast Guard Station Burlington, our Sailor of the Year award is named in his honor. His commitment to service, professionalism, and quiet strength continues to set the standard for what it means to wear the uniform in this community.

We remember him not just on his birthday, but every day — in the way we lead, the way we train, and the way we take care of each other and the people of Lake Champlain.

His legacy lives on here at Station Burlington.

Station Burlington recently completed an Ice Ready for Operations (RFO) inspection conducted by Sector Northern New England out of Portland, Maine. Representing the Captain of the Port, the team evaluated our administration, training, gear readiness, and on-ice ex*****on.

The crew performed exceptionally well across all areas. Professional, disciplined, and prepared. The inspection confirmed what we expect of ourselves — Station Burlington is ready for winter operations.

As Lake Champlain approaches a rare full freeze, ice conditions can change rapidly and remain unpredictable. Ice that looks solid may be dangerously thin due to currents and shifting weather.

U.S. Coast Guard Station Burlington reminds the public that no ice is ever guaranteed safe. Use caution, wear proper gear, and never go alone. Stay safe on the lake.

Ice Rescue Response – Lake Champlain

Today, U.S. Coast Guard Station Burlington responded alongside Charlotte Fire & Rescue and the Vermont State Police an ice rescue case off Charlotte Beach.

Five experienced Nordic ice skaters became stranded when a sheet of ice unexpectedly separated from shore and began drifting. Thanks to quick coordination between agencies—and the skaters being well prepared with proper clothing, gear, and communication—all five individuals were safely brought back to shore. No injuries were reported.

🚨 Ice Safety Reminder:
Ice conditions can change rapidly, even on clear and sunny days. No ice is ever guaranteed safe. If you venture onto the ice:
• Go prepared with proper gear and layers
• Carry a cell phone
• Check ice thickness frequently
• Never go alone

We’re proud of the teamwork displayed today and grateful for the strong partnerships that help keep our Lake Champlain community safe.

ATON Watching properly year-round! Recently, one of our team members was fishing at Crown Point & captured a great photo of one of our aids.

**Fun fact: The design of these buoys allows them to be pulled through the ice & sometimes under. They are made of steel which that withstands the pressure of the ice surrounding it.**

During the winter months, the Aids to Navigation Team in Burlington continues to train the crew & prepare for the spring. We achieve this by sending them to specialty schools, drafting new aid locations, pressuring washing & organizing the seasonal aids for early spring setting. While the advertised Light List date is May 1st, we strive to set the aids as soon as it thaws enough.

Thank you for your continued support!
