There is the potential for flooding of WVPD trails along the Winooski River over the next few days - this will include the Ethan Allen Homestead, Macrae Farm Park, Derway Cover and Derway Cove, and Woodside Natural Area. Please use caution - conditions can change quickly. Hopefully it’s not a full repeat of last year again…

The second bridge at Woodside Natural Area is back in place after being moved (for the third time this past year) during this years July flood event! Our awesome crew has been working hard to repair damages from the three floods this past year. One more bridge at Woodside still needs some work but we’re making progress!

Happy Sunny Saturday! Our Parks Maintenance Crew has been BUSY this summer and fall replacing and rebuilding bridges at several parks, mitigating damage from the July floods, and keeping our trails in top shape!

Photos 1 & 2: before and after photos of a board walk at Woodside Natural Area. This park was especially hit hard in the three flood events this past year. One of the bridges is still out and we hope to get it back place soon!

TRAILS UPDATE! Most WVPD trails are open but with CAUTION! With more rain in the forecast this week trails will remain muddy and wet in some sections. The flooding left a layer of slippery mud on many trails. Some trails/trail sections are closed due to debris on them or displaced board walks and bridges (Woodside Natural Area) - our small crew is working hard to fix things up!

Please follow mud season etiquette - walk through mud puddles/muddy sections or turn around and find a more durable trail to enjoy!

Please respect all trail closure notices!

Continue to use caution on trails along rivers and streams as water is still running high and fast, and erosion and bank undercutting can still be occurring.

TRAILS REMAIN CLOSED at the Ethan Allen Homestead, Macrae Farm Park, Woodside Natural Area, and Riverwalk Trail. Please give trails some time to dry out more (👋 hello mud season in July again!). Our staff is working to assess trail conditions and damage from last weeks flood as quickly as we can.

Please use caution and best judgment when visiting other parks and trails - if muddy best to turn around and find more durable trails, and use caution near river and stream banks as many have been eroded.

Trails remain CLOSED at the Ethan Allen Homestead (upper areas of the park and are open), Macrae Farm Park, Salmon Hole and Riverwalk Trail, and Woodside Natural Area. Even will flood waters receding some trails are still underwater, many will be damaged and all will be extremely muddy. Our staff need time time to assess damages and impacts from this recent storm, and our trails need time to dry out!

Please do not use any flooded trails or trails with standing water, especially along rivers or streams. Erosion and bank undercutting will be occurring, conditions can change quickly, flash flooding is still possible, and flood water can hide hazards and debris.
