The outdoor severe weather warning sirens in Des Moines County have experienced intermittent system failures. While our technicians continue to try to diagnose and repair the issue, we are sharing the recommendation that all citizens sign up for severe weather alerts through ALERT IOWA.

You can sign up for Alert Iowa through text by texting DesMoinesIA to the number 67283.

From the Office of Sheriff Kevin Glendening:

On June 6, 2026, at approximately 9:29p.m., Des Moines County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation at Summer St. and Dodge St.

A Deputy K-9 unit conducted an open-air sniff around the vehicle resulting in a positive K-9 alert to the odor of narcotics. While investigating this matter, Deputies searched a passenger in the vehicle identified as Terry Eugene Wixom, age 60, of Burlington, IA. Deputies located a bag of co***ne in Wixom’s pocket.

Wixom was placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense. He was transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center.

Iowa's Move Over Law requires motorists to change lanes or slow down when approaching a vehicle on the shoulder displaying flashing lights - this includes emergency vehicles, tow trucks, commercial trucks, and passenger vehicles with hazard lights illuminated. Penalties for violating this law include a fine and potentially suspension of driver's license privileges ranging from 90 days to one year.
If you see flashing lights on the side of the road, it doesn't matter the color, move over!

From the Office of Sheriff Kevin Glendening:

On June 5, 2026, at approximately 12:21a.m., Des Moines County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a vehicle for a moving violation at N. Roosevelt Ave. and Kirkwood St. The driver was identified as Richard Donald Chambers, age 69, of Fairfield, IA.

Deputies conducted a consent search of Chambers person and located methamphetamine. Deputies then searched his vehicle and located drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine. Chambers was placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense, possession of drug paraphernalia, and improper turn at intersection.

Chambers was transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center.

From the Office of Sheriff Kevin Glendening:

On May 28, 2026, at approximately 12:34a.m., Des Moines County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a vehicle at Short Ave. and Mt. Pleasant St. after observing the vehicle operating without any rear lights. The driver was identified as Curtis Leroy Waddell, age 68, of Burlington, IA.

During the traffic stop, a Deputy K-9 unit conducted an open-air sniff around the vehicle resulting in a positive alert to the odor of narcotics. Deputies searched the vehicle and located a bag of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. The methamphetamine weight over 7 grams and did not have a drug tax stamp affixed to it. Waddell was placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense, possession of drug paraphernalia, and fail to affix a drug tax stamp. He was transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center.

From the Office of Sheriff Kevin Glendening:

On May 19, 2026, at approximately 9:38p.m., Des Moines County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a vehicle at Lucas Ave. and Osborn St. for a defective muffler. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Adam Howard Gulick, age 44, of Burlington, IA. A driver’s license check showed Gulick was suspended. Gulick was unable to provide insurance to deputies.

During the traffic stop, a Deputy K-9 unit conducted an open-air sniff around the vehicle resulting in a positive alert for the odor of narcotics. Deputies searched the vehicle and located ma*****na and drug paraphernalia.

Gulick was placed under arrest for driving under suspension, defective muffler, no insurance, possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center.

From the Office of Sheriff Kevin Glendening:

On May 18, 2026, at approximately 9:40a.m., Des Moines County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the Des Moines County Correctional Center for an inmate found with contraband.

Deputies responded to the Des Moines County Correctional Center and were advised that inmate Lynett Elizabeth Sollars, age 40, of West Burlington, IA was found in possession of methamphetamine after returning from morning court. Deputies seized the methamphetamine and Sollars was charged with possession of contraband in a correctional institution and possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense.

From the Office of Sheriff Kevin Glendening:

On May 15, 2026, at approximately 12:06a.m., Des Moines County Sheriff’s Deputies checked on a suspicious vehicle at 801 S. Wapello St. in Mediapolis, IA. The vehicle was seen in a business lot after hours. Deputies observed the driver of the vehicle was asleep with the vehicle running and the brake lights illuminated. Deputies identified the driver as Dillon Dean Hostetter, age 29, of Burlington, IA.

Deputies were aware Dillon did not have a valid driver’s license. A check of his driving status showed he was barred. Dillon was placed under arrest for driving while barred. Dillon was searched incident to arrest and deputies located a pill bottle in his pocket containing methamphetamine.

Dillon was transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center and charged with driving while barred and possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense.
