Every year, ahead of Memorial Day, the Boone County Chapter, NSDAR chooses one Boone County Cemetery to place flags at the graves of veterans. This year they are honoring Old Burlington Cemetery- resting place of several veterans, including Revolutionary War Patriots, Israel Gilpin and Stephen Collins. We sincerely thank the Boone County Chapter for thinking of us this year. The flags are lovely!

The former pond basin of Old Burlington Cemetery has been beautifully repurposed by Boone County Parks as a woodland garden, providing a serene Reflection Garden for visitors. We are grateful to Parks for developing this stunning space. The upkeep of historic cemeteries requires a collective effort, and we are fortunate to have a community that values our cemeteries!

By restoring Lonnie’s stone- which laid on the ground for as long as I remember, the Boone County Jail honored the parents by restoring the memory of the son. This beautiful stone reminds us of what historic preservation is really about, remembering those who came before us. They say a person fades away from collective memory within 100 years of passing. Lonnie’s memory has been with us 143 years within Old Burlington and now, hopefully, will remain in our collective memory for much longer. Once again, the Boone County Historic Preservation Board extends its gratitude to such a wonderful community partner.
