Community Notice – Gateway Fiber Representatives

You may see two gentlemen out and about in Burlington over the coming months representing Gateway Fiber. Devin Barnett and Eric Smith will be intermittently visiting commercial businesses throughout the rest of the year to provide information and take orders for Gateway Fiber services.

For identification purposes, Devin Barnett is pictured on the left, and Eric Smith is pictured on the right.

Gateway Fiber will have additional employees conducting solicitation at a later time. When they begin going door-to-door at residences, we will post their photos and provide an update.

For now, there will be NO residential solicitation. If you see Devin or Eric visiting local businesses, they are authorized Gateway Fiber representatives conducting business outreach.

We appreciate everyone helping us keep our community informed and know who is out making sales calls.

Local resident targeted in scam
The Burlington Police Department recently took a report from a local resident who was contacted by someone claiming they had won millions of dollars and a luxury vehicle.
Unfortunately, this is a scam that continues to target people in Burlington.
The scammer may claim to represent a legitimate company, sweepstakes organization, or even a government agency. They may tell you that you have won a large amount of money, an expensive vehicle, or both — but before you can receive your “winnings,” you are told that you must pay taxes, processing fees, insurance, shipping costs, or other expenses.
This is a major red flag. Legitimate sweepstakes do not require you to pay money upfront to receive a prize. Scammers may also ask for your bank account information, credit card information, Social Security number, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or a wire transfer.

Remember:
• You can't win a contest you never entered.
• Never pay money to receive a prize.
• Never provide your banking or personal information to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
• Don't allow someone to pressure you into making an immediate decision.
• Don't click on suspicious links or call phone numbers provided by an unknown caller.
• If someone says you won millions of dollars and a luxury car, but you have to send money first — you didn't win. You're being scammed.

Scammers often use excitement and urgency to keep victims from taking time to think about what is happening. They may also provide convincing-looking documents, phone numbers, websites, or names to make the scam appear legitimate.
If you receive a message or phone call like this, stop and talk to someone you trust before sending any money or providing personal information.
This type of scam happened right here in our community. Don't assume it can't happen to you or someone you know. The best thing to do is not answer the call in the first place and then block it.
Please share this post with your family, friends, and neighbors. A simple warning could prevent someone from losing their hard-earned money.

SCAM ALERT – PLEASE SHARE

The Burlington Police Department is warning residents about a scam involving criminals impersonating Apple representatives and government officials.

In a recent incident, a local resident received a notification claiming that someone had accessed their Apple Pay account and used it to purchase and view child po*******hy. The victim was then directed to a phone number where the scammers claimed the victim's phone had been hacked and that the hacker was located in China.

The victim was later contacted by another scammer who claimed to be an inspector with the Social Security Administration. The scammer told the victim that someone at their bank was responsible and instructed them to withdraw $10,000 in cash and send it through UPS to an address in California. The victim followed the instructions, resulting in a $10,000 financial loss.

One of the biggest red flags in this scam was the victim being instructed not to contact local law enforcement.

Please remember:
• Apple, the Social Security Administration, your bank, or law enforcement will not instruct you to withdraw large amounts of cash and ship it to someone to "catch a hacker."
• Government agencies will not demand that you send cash through UPS, FedEx, or other delivery services.
• If someone tells you not to contact the police, your bank, or your family, that is a major warning sign.
• Do not trust phone numbers provided by unexpected callers or pop-up notifications. Contact the company or agency directly using a verified phone number.
• If you believe you are being scammed, stop communicating with the caller and contact your local police department before sending any money.

Scammers often use fear and urgency to prevent people from thinking clearly. If something doesn't seem right, stop, slow down, and verify before sending money.
