We’re organizing across the state to build working-class power and fight for a better Vermont. 🌹 🌹 Green Mountain DSA is the Vermont chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, a political organizing group focused on improving conditions for all people, everywhere. We believe that working people should run both the economy and society democratically to meet human needs, not to make profits for a few. We are a political and activist organization, not a party; through campus and community-based chapters, DSA members use a variety of tactics, from legislative to direct action, to fight for reforms that empower working people. 🌹

Labor Day has complicated origins. Workers created the holiday, but it was made a federal holiday in 1894 amid an extraordinary wave of labor militancy, as the Pullman Strike shook the country.

The federal recognition of Labor Day was, in part, an attempt to placate a growing labor movement without conceding the fundamental changes workers were demanding. Days later, President Grover Cleveland sent federal troops against striking workers.

But we’ll take any opportunity to celebrate workers.

So today we celebrate the people who fought, struck, organized, and died for the rights working people have today, and everyone still fighting for more.

Happy Labor Day from Green Mountain DSA. 🌹✊
