Sweating more in the hot weather this week?

During extreme heat, it’s important to drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated can help prevent dehydration, heat stroke, fatigue, and more.

Keep a water bottle nearby, take breaks in the shade, and make hydration part of your daily routine this week.

Drug overdose has become a serious public health concern, and opioid-related overdose has increased.

This training will teach participants how to properly react in an emergency situation, if they encounter a suspected overdosing. Participants will learn how to administer the drug Naloxone (Narcan), a life-saving medication used to treat a suspected opioid overdose.

If you or someone you know would like to attend the training, please respond via email to [email protected] or call 781-270-1955

🤝 Meet the Team: Susan Lumenello

Susan Lumenello has served as Burlington’s Director of Public Health since 2012, following a career in environmental consulting focused on site cleanup and remediation. She first joined the Town in 2010 as the Environmental Engineer for the elected Board of Health before stepping into the Director role.

In her position, Susan helps oversee a wide range of public health initiatives and works closely with the elected Board of Health to develop and enforce local public health regulations. From environmental health and hazardous materials to to***co and v**e regulations, her work helps keep Burlington safe, healthy, and prepared for emerging public health issues.

A Burlington resident for more than 30 years, Susan says serving the community she calls home is one of the most rewarding parts of the job. While she has a strong passion for science, she also enjoys creative hobbies outside of work, including writing and learning to play piano.

🤝 Meet the Volunteer: Rita Shah

For many years, Rita Shah has been a dedicated volunteer with the Burlington Volunteer Reserve Corps, helping residents feel supported and prepared.

A Burlington community member for 44 years and a licensed clinical social worker, Rita says volunteering was a natural fit. It gave her the chance to make a difference while continuing to learn through real-life emergency preparedness efforts and community outreach. Rita has also been a longtime bridge for Burlington’s South Asian community, helping connect residents with local resources and support. Her message is simple: “Your neighbor is here to help.”

Some of her favorite volunteer memories include the Community Health Fair, Celebrate Burlington, and the lifelong friendships she’s made along the way.

Her advice for anyone thinking about volunteering? “Just show up. Attend a meeting, fill out a volunteer form — it’s very fulfilling work.”

For more information on how to get involved like Rita did, visit www.burlington.org/PublicHealth or volunteers can enroll directly at https://maresponds.org/.
