Greg Campbell had finished a round of golf on the morning of Aug. 7 and was looking forward to grabbing lunch with friends.
Instead, the afternoon took a life-threatening turn when Greg suddenly went into cardiac arrest.
What happened next was a remarkable chain of people, preparation and lifesaving care all coming together at exactly the right time.
Gregโs friend, Andrew, who had previously taught CPR classes, immediately recognized the emergency and began performing CPR. Those first few minutes are critical during cardiac arrest, and Andrewโs quick action helped keep blood flowing until Burleson Fire/EMS arrived.
Within minutes, Burleson firefighter/paramedics were on scene and took over Gregโs care. Crews continued CPR, utilized a LUCAS mechanical chest compression device and began preparing Greg for rapid transport.
At the same time, another part of the lifesaving response was already being set in motion.
Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth has worked with area fire and EMS agencies to identify cardiac arrest patients who may be candidates for ECPR, or extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation. ECPR uses specialized equipment to temporarily take over the work of the heart and lungs, allowing doctors additional time to treat the underlying cause of a patientโs cardiac arrest.
Because timing is critical, Burleson Fire/EMS alerted the hospital while Greg was being treated and transported, allowing a specialized cardiac team to prepare for his arrival. Crews were able to get Greg to the hospital within the critical window for ECPR activation.
Just three days later, Greg walked out of the hospital.
On Sept. 1, he walked into Burleson Fire Station 16 for a very different reason: to meet some of the first responders who helped save his life.
Greg told the firefighters that he believes a miracle happened that day. He also had an important message for the crews who cared for him: ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐.
Even on the calls when they donโt get the outcome they hoped for, Greg reminded them that what they do matters to patients, families and the community they serve.
Today, Greg is back home with his wife, three children and family because an entire chain of survival worked exactly as it should: a friend who knew CPR and acted immediately, Burleson firefighter/paramedics who provided advanced emergency care and a hospital team that was prepared and ready when he arrived.
Saving a life takes all of us.
And sometimes, the first link in that chain is simply someone nearby who knows CPR.
