The Cumberland County Fiscal Court is pleased to announce a partnership between the Cumberland County Senior Center (aka Veterans Memorial Community Center) and Cumberland County Interns to provide a "Phone a Friend" program at the center (213 Upper River Street) on June 11 from 10 AM until Noon Central Time. The goal of the event is to provide basic help with technology like cell phones or computers. The idea came out of a needs assessment meeting hosted by Tammy Cary and the Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency. Attendees said it would be helpful if someone was occasionally available to provide guidance on how to set up a Walmart or Amazon account for ordering groceries/necessities, to help navigate how to do a software update on a cell phone, show citizens how to block spam calls/text, set up a voicemail recording or email account, and learn how to access or send an email.

While the fiscal court doesn't have a team member dedicated to this type of work full time, we do recognize that some of our youngest team members may have strengths in this area and look forward to letting them use those strengths to benefit the area's seniors. The time and location were selected not only because it was the location of the original meeting where this need was mentioned, but also because the senior center will be open during those hours and will be serving a free lunch to anyone age 60 or older. We hope this event will also bring more people to the center so they can see what an asset it is for the community. The in-person (FREE) lunch will be served at 11:00 AM for those 60 and older.

Members of the Cumberland County Team will be stationed at the back of the room for anyone who wants to walk up with technology questions. If there's a large need, we ask that citizens be patient as we work through the line. Please also manage expectations. This program is for basic help with technology. Team members will not be able to handle more complex requests like fixing a website, or coding of any kind. This is a pilot program and is only in trial status. We do not yet know if it will be a recurring event. We continue to look for ways to bridge the gap between those in our community with the most life experience and those in our community with the most youthful energy. We hope this program is another step in that direction!

If you have questions prior to arriving, you may give us a call at 270-864-3444. We hope to see you at the center on June 11 between 10 AM and Noon.

A little outdoor work at Salem Park this morning was a good way for the newest CumberlandCounty Interns to start the workday. There were three bushes that had trees growing inside them and another two bushes that were totally dead with tees were growing in their place. We trimmed the other trees in the park that had low hanging branches so kids can now safely play in the shade. We cut back trees around picnic tables so people can enjoy their relaxation time without being bothered by an unruly tree limb. If you haven't been to Salem Park to enjoy the playground, the creek, or just the quietness of it all, we strongly recommend a visit! We'll be back to the park soon for some painting work and then look forward to a similar working visit over at Marrowbone Park.

Please encourage local citizens in need to participate in our monthly USDA commodity food distribution. Your fiscal court, volunteers, and management team are pleased to provide participants this week with a variety of food! We hope to see you Wednesday (tomorrow) at the Cumberland County Annex (formerly the recycling center), located at 1805 South Main Street. The line will start moving at 8:00 AM and FOOD IS LIMITED. Please arrive early for registration. Food is limited and you MUST stay on the pavement while waiting. (Please be respectful and do not get on the neighbor's grass.)

Note: Participants must meet the USDA household income requirements. Any person picking up food for someone else will need to present the scannable card they received when they originally registered. If you have not yet registered for your commodity card, please consider stopping by our office soon to sign up. This is a tremendous service provided by your Fiscal Court in partnership with Feeding America. Thank you to all those involved. We'll see you in the morning!

Raelin Castillo and Evan Stotts stopped by the radio station to talk about how being a part of The Civics Club during high school has helped them during their college days!

They agreed they had more confidence, they had more of an understanding how government works and they could easily navigate their way around in the bigger cities.

Raelin is majoring in Animal Science and just finished her freshman year at University of Kentucky.

Evan is majoring in Political Science and just finished his freshman year at Western Ky. University.

Thanks to the partnership between the Cumberland County Fiscal Court and City of Burkesville, Tire Amnesty Day 2026 was a success! By our count, we collected over 2,500 tires during the two-day event. We appreciate all those who participated and are grateful to every member of the court and council for continuing to invest in this valuable public service.

The numbers are in. Based on the amount of scrap metal brought to dumpster days just a few weeks ago, the county received two checks for a grand total of $1,759.20. It may seem small, but that's nearly $1,800 in revenue that can go toward the cost of the dumpsters. Thanks to the public, that's double what is typical for this event! This is how we help to make sure any expansion of a public service is strategic and sustainable.
