Pender County Government plans to operate on a normal schedule on Monday, Jan. 26, as weather conditions are forecast to trend warmer into Sunday and Monday.

As winter weather approaches this weekend, local emergency management officials urge all residents to take immediate steps. Preparing now will help protect your family and animals with the freezing weather coming this weekend and this week. The National Weather Service forecasters are calling for sleet and freezing rain to come into the area tomorrow night into Sunday, creating dangerous travel conditions and possible power outages across the region.

Key Safety Actions
• Restock or update your emergency kit today to ensure you have essential supplies ready before conditions worsen.
• Keep at least a three day supply of non perishable food in your home to avoid unnecessary trips during hazardous weather.
• Use rock salt or ice melt products to keep walkways clear and reduce the risk of slips and falls.
• Create or review your family communications plan so everyone knows how to stay in touch if power or cell service is disrupted.
• Avoid travel whenever possible during winter storms due to dangerous road conditions.
• If travel is absolutely necessary, use extreme caution and allow extra time.
• Check on older adults to be sure they have heat, food, medications, and working flashlights.
• Keep a close eye on children, especially when playing outdoors. Limit time in the cold and make sure they’re dressed in warm layers.
• Bring pets indoors to protect them from freezing temperatures.
• Move outdoor animals to sheltered areas and ensure they have access to unfrozen drinking water.
• Never use charcoal grills or camp stoves indoors for heating or cooking. These devices produce toxic fumes that can be deadly.

Download the Pender County Emergency Management App for emergency information notifications.

Pender Water & Sewer is encouraging residents to take proactive steps ahead of the anticipated winter weather expected to impact the region this weekend. Forecasted conditions, including potential snow and ice, may affect waterlines and other utility infrastructure.

Pender Water & Sewer is working closely with local emergency management officials and community partners to monitor the storm and coordinate response efforts. While uncertainty remains regarding the exact amount of snow or ice accumulation, preparing now can help prevent costly damage and service disruptions in the long run.

Staff will be prepared throughout the weekend to respond to emergency situations as conditions allow. Please be aware that severe weather may impact travel and accessibility, which could result in delays to normal response times. Taking precautions now can help reduce the risk of frozen or burst pipes.
