The 23rd Annual Blueberry Festival is coming up soon and the Dallas Herring Library Annex has some great resources on the history of both the festival and how the blueberry came to be such a big deal for Pender County.

If you’re interested in the more detailed history of the blueberry and Pender County, stop by to browse the book Atkinson Blueberry Land by Glendal L. Jenkins – we've shared a few pages from it in this post.

Additionally, we’ve got several articles about both the festival itself and Pender County’s connection to blueberries including a feature article from Our State magazine and a piece on the 2nd Annual Blueberry Festival from the Pender Post.

The Dallas Herring Library Annex is located at 108 S. Cowan Street in Burgaw (across the street from the Main Library) and is open 10-5 Thursday and Friday and 10-2 on Saturday, and available by appointment 10-5 Monday through Wednesday.

The Dallas Herring Library Annex has a new collection to share!

William P. Quinn served in the US Army from 1936-1939, and again from 1940-1945. Though Quinn was originally from the Chicago area, he served at Camp Davis in North Carolina during his second stint with the Army. His Daughter recently donated a collection of artifacts, photographs, and news clippings. This collection is now available to be viewed by the public and includes some of the things pictured here: post cards of local places, Army meal tickets and transportation papers, and the Camp Davis Station Compliment Historical and Pictorial Review (1941) which served as something of a yearbook.

The Dallas Herring Library Annex is located at 108 S. Cowan Street in Burgaw (across the street from the Main Library) and is open 10-5 Thursday and Friday and 10-2 on Saturday, and available by appointment 10-5 Monday through Wednesday.

Next week, on Thursday, May 21 at 6:00 PM, the Main Library in Burgaw will host author and historian Rona Simmons to discuss her book “No Average Day” which takes October 24, 1944 as its lens. More Americans died that day than at Pearl Harbor or D-Day, and Simmons tells the story through the people who actually experienced it: clerks, radio operators, cooks, sailors, machinist mates, riflemen, and pilots and their air crews, researched through small-town newspapers, ship’s logs, and conversations with descendants.

Patrons can join us for an open house from 5:00-6:00 PM at the Dallas Herring Library Annex, located across the street from the Main Library, to view related materials from the library collection. One such item featured at the open house is the World War II Honor List of Dead and Missing from the State of North Carolina that was issued by the War Department in June of 1946 – part of which is pictured here.

If you’ve visited us at the Main Library in Burgaw or the Dallas Herring Library Annex, you’ve likely seen the beautiful stained-glass windows of the Burgaw Presbyterian Church right down the street. According to the pictured account by Mattie Bloodworth, it was the first church erected in Burgaw when it was established in 1879. In addition to this account, the library collection includes a booklet on the history of the church which was published in celebration of the church’s centennial in 1979, and a bulletin from the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society about the denomination’s history in the area.

These items can be viewed at the Dallas Herring Library Annex which is located at 108 S. Cowan Street in Burgaw (across the street from the Main Library) and is open 10-5 Thursday and Friday and 10-2 on Saturday, and available by appointment 10-5 Monday through Wednesday.

While March is often a celebration of all things Irish, we’d like to focus on the Scots-Irish folk and their connection to Pender County. Early groups of Scots-Irish settled along the Cape Fear River region of North Carolin in the early 1700s, many in what is now present-day Pender County. The term “Scotch-Irish” is used in the US in reference to immigrants of Ulster-Scots background who hail from the Ulster region of Northern Ireland during the 18th and 19th centuries. They were primarily of Scots and English ancestry, and often Protestant rather than Catholic.

The Dallas Herring Library annex has several interesting books on their history and culture. Books featured in this post include “The Scotch-Irish: a Social History,” “Directory of Scots in the Carolinas,” “Irish and Scotch-Irish Ancestral Research,” and “Directory of Scottish Settlers in North America.”

Additionally featured is “Aunt Mag’s Recipe Book” by author Carolyn Booth. Aunt Meg is a character from Booth’s novel, “Between the Rivers” which is set in parts of North Carolina – including Onslow County. Booth dedicates the recipe book to her Scotch-Irish ancestors who settled “on the land between the rivers in Blade, Pender, New Hanover, and Onslow Counties.” We’ve included two of the recipes here if you’re looking for something comforting to cook up for the weekend.
